Pack it with grease as you said.
Then using a spare input shaft, put it in the hole, hit the sucker with a rubber mallet or with a peice of wood to protect the shaft and use a steel hammer, as hard and as fast as you can.
This normally works for me.
I suppose if the bush is badly worn i'd put rag over the end to take up the space and stop the grease from coming out so easy?

Keep adding grease and as ^ said. use a spare input shaft. Mine was BAD - centre was about 2mm larger than the new one and I thought it wouldn't be moving but it did.

The way i removed the bush was with a slide hammer. My grandfathers mate made one for me. Two bolts with the nuts weilded together with a big metal weight between one head and bolt.

Basicaly you hook the 'empty' bolt head in the bush and then slide the big metal weight backwards and forwards 'hammering' the bush out.

I believe you can buy them as well. :spoton:

Hi Guys.

I've never had any luck with the grease idea either & it's way too messy.

I've found the easiest & most reliable way is to use a large tap, around 5/8" UNC from memory & just cut a thread in the bush. It's brass or something similar & cuts very easily. When the tap bottoms on the crank, you just keep turning the tap & out comes the bush.

Done dozens that way & it doesn't matter how worn they are, you just go to a bigger tap, if necessary.

use the end of an old broom if you dont have a spare input shaft... Just keep goin with the grease - it'll come slowly!!

I too have never had any luck with packing them with grease, I've always used a slide hammer as well, I've got one made out of stainless steel that does the job its also good for axles when needed too

I had one stuck once, i knew it was cheap form autobahn, so i just got a chisel and a mallet and cracked it into two bits, didnt take long at all and it was out... Then just put a new one it when the time came.... They are made out of like a ceramic thing so they break fairly easy....

The other thing is prelube the new bush. they are porous so pressurise some gearbox oil into it, it should sweat. Then drive it in. I have always used grease meyhod and never had a problem.

Cheers
