Hey everyone,

I am having difficulty removing the cam shaft from my 186.

I can't turn the cam gear to get access to the two locating screws behind the cam gear. The annoying thing is they are only about a hole out.

Thanks,

Glenn

Glenn,
I assume motor is seized if it can't be turned to line up the holes to get at the cam retainer bolts. Other wise keep turing till they do.
If seized and you want the cam, drill or grind out the holes to get at the bolts, and the replace the cam gear with a new one. G.

Hey G,

I don't think its seized because I could turn the crank by the fly wheel when it was attached, but I can't get any leverage now.

Cheers

As said, Plugs out, if you got a manual put in fourth gear and give the car a bit of a shove, should free it up.

Why not put the balancer back on the key and try spin it from the crank pulley??.........All you have to do is spin it a few cms. to line up the 2 holes in the cam gear....If you can turn the carnk pulley the cam will follow!!...........Is the head, lifters and oil pump still fitted to this engine?

Hey thanks for all the advise guys,

I should have said the head is off and its on an engine stand, so no flywheel. I tried putting the balancer back on but I still couldn't get leverage. I might have to try a bit harder, but I don't want to F anything.

Thanks again

Thanks Stretch and DD, I did that and it worked!

Now next problem, The book says slide cam shaft out, but its hitting something and only moves about 10mm. The only thing left on the motor is the oil pump, pistons and crank. There is a little gear by where the dizzy goes, is this stopping it.

Thanks again for all the help peps

You have to pop all the lifters out of their bores and take the oil pump off too...That cam WILL NOT slide out with the Oil Pump still bolted to the engine....It should slide out really easy then, but be real careful sliding it out as you wont want to score the cam bearings.

Slow and Steady mate.

Insert your middle finger in the vacant oil pump hole in the block to support and help guide the cam out through the bearings.
When you get the cam halfway out of the block then move your finger up to the fuel pump opening
Reverse the same procedure when you insert the new camshaft.

Ok thanks,

I can't get the oil pump out though, I have taken out the four main bolts and I have taken the cover plate off but its very tight coming off.

Cheers

The pump gaskets have probably been coated with gasket goo which has adhered the pump to the block.
I've found it advantageous to leave the oil filter on the pump to help give some leverage.

Once you have the oil pump out, you will have to lift each lobe through the cam bearing holes, so its not just a case of pulling, more a slow up and down and guided process, lots easier with the engime upside down and the sump off.
