The story on the lion logo at Holden is the lion rolling the rock, meaning to discover and invent etc, so i guess for Holden to be inventive with car making, and to explore like the lion.

Moreover - the cover of the October 1971 edition of the LC parts catalogue had a short tailed lion depicted and the February edition of the LJ parts catalogue had a long tailed lion. My guess is 1/1/72 for the notional changeover, but I have found telephone directories still using he short tailed version as late as 1975, but that is probably more to do with the local dealer not wishing to pay for new artwork.
