what is the reason behind the near side plate being painted over, were they fitted before paint to keep track of the paint and trim colors.
is it ok to paint under them and leave them bare.

Many of the show car owners remove the ID plates - all 3 of them and paint under them, they then polish the alloy plates to shine like chrome plating and rivet them back on.
Now if you are an originality buff you will have to shell out big bucks for a a few special rivets. I guess a lot depends on the car and how pedantic the owner wants to be.
I won't and cannot comment if this is legal or not but I have yet to hear of anyone being pinged for incorrect rivets.
Something tells me it's probably illegal to remove them... Any comments?

Cheers
Herne

It is illegal to "interfere" with them in any way. I think that law is more aimed at modifying them, not removing the paint from them.
More wondering why they got squirted in the first place.
I was also thinking of cleaning them up, but not polishing to mirror, didnt want to cause too much "interference".

the cars have primer underneath, and in most cases, most of the area underneath is body colour, you may find a small patch just primer under the tag of a car that has not been interfered with. The Passenger side tag, or body options tag was fitted to the car just before painting, and is the colour of the engine bay, not necessarily the colour of the car.

Did this apply to the LH SL/R 5000 as well? when I bought my car all 3 tags were unpainted, the tags have been off as well, where do you get the original rivets?

I think Torana 05 (member here) may be able to supply genuine rivets.

My LX SLR had all 3 compliance plates not painted. The car was only 3 years old when i got it & i was the second owner, so i don't know, i dont have it now. The hatch i have now has the left plate the same colour as the car.

I have also seen original LH and early LX Toranas with all 3 plates unpainted. Not the general rule though.

How many A9Xs have you seen with the plates missing? The owners take them off and lock them away for safe keeping. I have known a few and seen a few more, and none have ever been pinged for "interfering" with them.

My four all have LHS tag painted engine bay colour, Black on LX SL/R, Chamois LX, Mandarin Red LX and mystery LH (see my other post this section).

Cheers.

Is it legal to drive around with out them.

couldn't say, and I've never really asked, but I know it happens. I don't know of anyone getting done for it.
