Hi folks, i have recently joined your forum after purchasing a torana 308 engine. The engine was in a wb one tonner i bought, with the idea of fixing up, however after some
research i discovered the 308 has the engine ID of HT 47*** and a cast number 20J5. This engine im lead to beleive is out o a slr 5000 or A9X thats as far as my knowledge goes. Have also been told that it may be worth selling the engine as it may be worth something to an torana owner. Was this engine built to any special specifications or is it the same as any other 308, and the value purely lies in the desire of a slr 5000 owner. The engine is complete and running, any ideas on value?

I would like to get your thoughts

Cheers Chanoo

20J5 puts it as 1975
So not for an A9X
If an owner or a very late 75 or very early 76 SLR5000 was missing an engine he might get emotional about it

And as for its value.. .thats going to be based on a tear down and inspect and emotions
As the original car might no longer exist or be known due to poor record keeping

Interesting. My motor is 5J5 so it's cast 5th September 1975 with engine prefix HT 51466. That motor is cast after mine and has a prefix of HT 47XXX??

Still... theres probably less than 50 cars that engine "really suits"
And many of those cars don't exist anymore
So the market is limited to those that might care enough... I'm not one of them... so to me personally... it has very little value beyond being a block
But someone might care enough to make it valuable in their eyes
I've had an offer on an engine of mine that has a favourable date code and engine number too ... but currently its not for sale
Price isn't the issue

Stick it on ebay if your desire is to move it... let the market decide... set your reserve and you'll soon find out if its worth what you think it might be
And in all honesty... you just purchased it... so you know what its worth ... to you
You'll never get rich buying and selling 308's

In my opinion, which dosnt really count for much, I would imagine the engine would only be worth $$$ if you found the car it came out of. GMH had records of my engine #, so I mean if someone bought this and fitted it to there July build SLR hoping to make it worth more, a search with GMH could prove that its not the correct engine for the car. So yeah pretty much as Dattoman says.

HT engines usually fetch around the 2k mark from what I have seen sold in recent times. I have seen them sell for a lot more too. Just depends on how badly someone wants that cast date block.

I would be in the market for buying the engine, not because it is a HT block, but because it is pre ADR27A.

That way I don't the have emissions / compliance issues, and don't risk blowing my original HT block when I take it to the drags.
