Hey guys,

I'm thinking of changing my LH from a 202 auto to a 253 auto. Could comeone please verify a few points for me? As far as I know, I have to change the front springs, the radiator and the wiring harness. Is that all?

It's my daily driver. Any pointers for squeezing more economy out of it? I realise its gonna be worse than the 202, but I only putt around in it. I'm not really fussed about sacrificing power at this stage...

Last thing, I've been told that 308's are a better all round engine than a 253. When driven lightly, apparently the 308 ends up more economical than the 253?

Let me know your thoughts,

Cheers,

Kurt.

you will need:
exhaust
gearbox
engine mounts
the stuff you mentioned.

you can modify a 6 cyl wiring harness.

a 253 driven lightly will give better economy than a 202. try a higher diff ratio to take advantage of the better torque and that will help economy

go the 253, they respond well to a mild cam and extractors.

Just for interests sake....

- what would a typical swap set you back? For say 253, trimatic, banjo,
brake booster, tailshaft, springs, radiator, wiring loom & single system.

Not recon'd parts or new parts, just second hand parts in good nick.

If you were to do the work yourself.

Just for interests sake. And in Sydney say.

:D :D :D :D :D :D

Cheers fellas. Yeah, I've got a set of genie extractors and a twin 2.something inch exhaust for it with a broken crossover, not sure whether to repair it or cut it out though...

Should I just run the standard stromberg carby? I've got a couple of holleys and XF webers lying around...

What sort of cam should I look at? Is it possible to get something that sounds lumpy at idle but gives good economy? What are they worth, and where should i go? (I'm from Sydney).

Cheers,

Kurt.

Your 202 diff & tailshaft wil be fine to use, as long as you don't plan to do burnouts and wheelies or the time. When i put the 253 in my Torrie and replaced the 202, my fuel economy was heaps better, due to te engine not needing to work as hard.

I did this swap in my torana... Very easy to do.... and 253's are easy to find....

I would stick a 4 barrel manifold on it and get a Quadrajet rebuilt... If youcan resist the temptation to open up the secondaries you will have a much more econmical car than the 202... But if you want to give it a squirt... mash your foot to the floor and u will be dancing!

Get a Red one if you can, as it doesnt require as much pollution gear... but if u get a blue one it doesnt matter all that much...
