Hi, just wondering what peoples thoughts on carby spacers. I am putting a holley 465 on my lx 253 and thinking about a 1" spacer . what would be the diff between a super sucker or plain square and 1" verse 2" spacer .fitting it on elderbrok performer mild cam etc.

It can have a profound difference with the venturi effect and fuel/air ratios hitting the cylinders. I'm pretty sure that's what the logic is based around. Don't understand it fully myself.

As far as I'm aware carby spacers can make quite Abit of difference but best to play with different thickness's and have the combo Dyno tuned to match to find the ideal setup

I won't speak from any here say but will tell you the one expeirience I had with a carby spacer.
I had just rebuilt my 308 in my VH Commy in line with a full resto and the engine was not only NOT making good power but didn't rev as free as it should considering the engine specs. I took it to several different places both in Kalgoorlie and then Perth WA with no luck.
I had pretty much resigned myself into having to just live with this engine when I came across an old guy at a tuning shop here in Perth that said he would take a look.
Well I picked the car up late in the arvo and boy was I happy. Sure the car needed some fine tuning but what actually 'fixed' it was a 1" carby spacer ! The engine pulled like a train and reved freely to 7200rpm.
What can I say but :D

Spacer will also help keep the carby cool if it is an insulator type spacer.

From what i have gathered it seems that carby spacers are kind like changing jets....

Sadly i cant tell you from here what primary jets your going to need in the carby, you will have to buy several to find the correct one, same deal with a carby spacer.

Cheers.

Do you have enough bonnet clearance for a 1" spacer?

You need a dyno to see which spacer if any work for your engine.

A carb spacer can increase your mph at the track, but not necessarily your ET.

Sometimes they work,sometimes they dont.

Borrow one to try if you can.

The best dyno is 1/4 mile long.

Thanks for that. That place did go broke, so that doesn't surprise me.

Notwithstanding that, my car seems to go better with the standard gasket? Don't know if there is a link.

put the new holley 465 on plus 1" spacer, cant tell you if the spacer or carby has made a diff but it goes like sh#t now. way more responsive and pulls harder topend either way very happy .will get it on a dyno for a fine tune and peace of mind.

Personal experience with spacers tested back to back at the drag strip showed a 2 inch open spacer on a single plane Edelbrock Torker to increase MPH by 4mph. The spacer also required jetting 4 sizes richer at both ends of the carb.. Removing it without changing the jets back resulted in an excessively rich mixture. The 2 inch spacer with 4 individual holes required the same jetting as the open spacer and ran the same MPH, however the ET was one and a half tenths better due to slightly improved low to mid range response than the open spacer. The total gain at the track from this effort was 4mph and 6 tenths!

Spacer requirements are directly related to the manifold plenum volume and shape but it is not an exact science because carb sizes and cam durations affect what works best as well. Testing all the combinations in the real world is unfortunately the only way to find what works best for your particular combination. Jetting must be revised for each change in order to make accurate comparisons.
