HI,,

FINALLY STARTED TO STRIP THE PAINT FROM THE CAR FOUND THE BEST WAY IS TO APPLY
PAINT STRIPPER NOT TO THICK ENOUGH TO SOFTEN THE TOP COATS THEN USE A PAINT SCRAPPER TO GET IT OFF TAKES MOST OF IT OFF TO THE OLD PAINT AND UNDER COAT LET IT DRY ,THEN SAND THE REST OFF BACK TO BARE METAL WITH THE 7INCH POLY CLEAN AND STRIP DISC ,THEN GIVE IT A GOOD ORBITAL WITH 60- 80 GRIT.BEEN ON IT NOW FOR A FEW DAYS AND WILL BE FEW MORE DAYS BEFORE I GET IT ALL BACK TO BARE METAL TAKES TIME THE DOOR JAMS AND ALL THE HARD TO GET TO PLACES .I HAVE BEEN USING A LITTLE SAND BLASTER I HAVE FOR THESE AREAS AND IT WORKS A TREAT SAVES A LOT OF SKIN ON YOUR FINGERS (LOL) , ANY WAY BY THE TIME I GET IT ALL BACK TO BARE METAL IT WILL HAVE BEEN SITTING AROUND FOR WEEK OR SO..SO BEFORE I APPLY THE EPOTEC 408 I THOUGHT THE BEST METHOD OF ATTACK WOULD BE TO SAND THE BARE METAL WITH 60 -80 GRIT GIVE IT A GOOD WIPE DOWN AND CLEAN WITH THINNERS OR W&G REMOVER,, THEN APPLY A METAL CONDITIONER ONE YOU CAN JUST WIPE ON THEN WIPE IT OFF GIVE IT ANOTHER WIPE OVER
THIS SHOULD REMOVER ANY SURFACE RUST AND CONTAMININTS THEN APPLY THE PRIMER
ANY ONE KNOW OF A GOOD METAL CONDITIONER TO USE OR A BETTER METHOD,,ANY ADVICE ALWAYS WELCOME

Tried the Bondall 'RANEX' (bought a 1 litre bottle from Bunnings) a few months back to do my brake booster and master cyl. Not bad stuff, used it the same way as I have done with Deoxidine, 1 part RANEX to 5 parts water, apply and scrub on with steel wool, wash off with clean water and a rag, then wipe dry with clean rags. Blow dry any crevices etc with compressed air.
Wear rubber gloves, eye protection and avoid breathing vapours.

Still think Deoxidine is better for surface and pitted rust removal but the RANEX worked OK.
One advantage of the RANEX is you can use it as a rust convertor, so they reckon.

Hi Al

Found it in the paint section (I think it was on the top shelf) with all the brush on and spray pack metal primers and undercoats.

nick yeah i found that to be the best way i reckon i would not have used a litre of stripper yet you dont need much just enough to soften the paint so it lifts and you slide the paint scrapper straight under the paint and lifts it off in strips ,,,the sand blaster i use is from super cheap about $25 i just adapted it to an old spray gun pot i had with a small piece of plastic tube so its more mobile or you can just run a piece of plastic tube a couple of feet long into bucket of sand , you can get the sand from the landscape supplies for $2 a bucket get the fine white washed sand it works great brings parts up like new i have used it ti clean up alloy mags , nuts bolts, diffs and other parts where you cannot get into sand
