G'day,

Just after some advice on the safest way of removing old paint from textured dash parts and center consoles? Obviously they cannot be sanded and whilst i have heard of oven cleaner i am not convinced it is safe. Paint stripper seems like a bad ideal. Just looking to get them back to bare plastic so they can be re painted in a satin finish. Cheers

Paint stripper is not recommended! Don't do it.

Im thinking perhaps dot 4 brake fluid, Maybe soaking in prepsol, or im pretty sure you can get a plastic safe paint stripper, mind not all plastics are the same.

Cheers.

Bomber the dash does not appear to be painted but the lower dash section seems to have been hit with some glossy paint, i'm guessing vinyl/plastic as it has adhered quite well. I would just paint over it but there are a few runs and i would like to get rid of them. Do the vinyl/plastic paints like the VHT one i have penetrate or just coat? Might mean i dont have to strip down the surface.

That's not fair brad you have such easy access to a blaster. Were all dashed and consoles painted satin black from factory or were they raw plastic?

I'd be tempted to try prepsol first, some brake fluid, and failing that a SMALL amount of thinners on a rag.

Cheers.

Will try the brake fluid sounds the goods. Is turpentine considered a thinner?

thinners will work fine...just don't drown it in them or let it sit for too long on the surface

I'm pretty sure Dirtbag soaked the hatchback B-pillar plastic vents in brake fluid for like a week and it brought the old paint and crap off.

In this case it would be the plastic dash and console so i am assuming metho wouldnt do too much. Went to bunnings but they had nothing safe for plastic.

Were plastic bits like dash and console painted from factory or were they 'raw' plastic?

Hi Jacob

The console was not painted, only the silver trim piece is painted.
Can't remember if the lower dash panel is painted or coloured plastic. Maybe scrape a small section of the plastic inside the back of the panel and see what you find.

Plastics are usually pretty tough but if your still having problems with the above suggestions you may want to try a plastic friendly paint stripper from a model/hobby shop if they still sell the stuff.

Selleys oven cleaner. Foam it up good, let it sit for a couple of hours then scrub with a toothbrush.

Flood it with water and scub some more.

If it works- repeat. If not, then it probably never will. Move on to brake fluid.

Used the Selleys oven cleaner on model cars before no problems with it eating the plastic.

Ok so if i was to paint these dash parts, would i use a satin black or matte/flat black to get closest to original as possible?

oven cleaner seemed the go but have been told not to, might give it a go in small area to test?

so considering the plastic is a bit aged now and wouldn't come up very nice, what colour should i be spraying to keep close to original as possible? Matte black or sating black?

Cheers

my console and lower dash were done in satin black which has matched up with my re-skinned dash top and door armrests.

I know for a fact that thinners is not the thing you want to be using......it took the grain pattern clean off

yeah does seem about right, i guess even raw plastic has a slight gloss to it so matte black would not look right!
