Hi all...

I am just wondering what exactly sand balsting is and does?? I have heard of people taking stuff down to sand blasters but never asked them what they were taking...I am just wondering what type of stuff you can get sandblasted and why people do it...like what is the end result??

Thanks

Sand aint actually used any more, something to do with air borne silica i think.
Now use copper slag or glass or a nut shell.. that i just can't think of at the moment
Can blast most things metal, alloy and even timber but not plastic as it will just chew through it.
Good for getting into corners and hard to reach places.
End result is a very clean and fairly roughed up surface.
But is a fairly messy clean up after, specialy on body's as grit gets everywhere and seems to just keep reappearing specialy when blowing around a bit of paint.
Care must be taken on thin or very rusty parts as holes can be blasted right through them... also through fingers and other body parts.

they replaced sand with crushed garnet
it's brilliant for cleaning up pitted metal

Ive also heard it work hardens the metal.
A friend had a pair of original 28 ford roadster front guards done and they finished in the bin, had to buy aftermarket ones, he was pissed off! :furious:

"Damn sand gets in everywhere" heard that somewhere before.

Anybody had dealings with chemical stripping?

If a cars panels or body was stretched, then the wrong medium was used. There are so many different grades of material used these days it's not funny. At work, we have blasted entire front spares on aircraft, and thats aluminium. I have blasted many items over the years at work, including parts of my cars, and never had a drama. One thing I will say is it's very messy, and if you do a car, prepare yourself to be cleaning it out for years.

I assume you mean granite? Well not usually "replaced", you see, the stonemasons use sand to blast the lettering into the stone, and the sand eventually breaks down into smaller pieces and hasnt got the strength to etch the very hard stone, so they on-sell their sand which is now about 90% granite to other users. They blast in a booth and re-use it over and over again. My brother is a stonemason and thats what he used to do.

One worth looking at is plastic media blasting. No heat to warp panels and it doesnt allow the metal to rust as quickly as sand does as it seems to leave some sort of film on it, which is easily removed with prepsol which you'll need to do regadless of which method you use before priming.

The best thing I have used when "sand blasting" is a mixture of wlanuts and brazel nuts. Again not heat and just works away teh paint. Really gentle. The other thign is it does nto get into everythign like sand does. so you are not pulling it out every weekend

Cheers
