Hi
Not for a torry but figured you guys would know. I have an EH sedan with a mild 350 chev. Have a radiator made up to suit but wondering what sort of thermo fans would run the best. Dont have any room behind the radiator so they will have to be in front.
The radiator has HQ tanks and has a core size of 480mm verticle, and 630mm horizontal(to suit the tanks). Its a 4 core and triple flow set up too.

What can I get that will fit? eg single or twin fans
Should I run any sort of shroud?

Cheers
Sam

Is the bonnet strut close to the radiator?, this will dictate what you can fit in.
You cant use any of the original equipment fans from Ford as they are not suitable to mount in front of the rad.

Hi
What exactly is a bonnet strut? The only thing that in front of the radiator is the grill and a cross brace behind it which is all attached in the front nose when its pulled off. There is plenty of room between the radiator and this brace for thermo fans.
cheers

Good ^, only asked as in a torrie the bonnet catch is supported by a strut that goes the full height of the rad and prevents a large single fan going there.
Sounds like you could fit a 16in fan in there, from memory, they are at least 10cm deep at the back of the motor. Check the Daviescraig website.

I tried a 16in thermo on my lc with a 308 & it wasnt really good enough, especially when stuck in traffic. The only things that I have found to work really well are au thermo fans or a eng fan with a shroud. You might have to fit a 16in on one side & a smaller fan on the other side if possible & if your going to see a lot of traffic or live in a hotter climate.

gtrboyy's experience is worth considering.

Just had a look at the Dcraig site, 2 x 14 inch fans = 1 x 16 in fan in terms of cfm.
Dont think you really have enough room to fit anything else.

Not aware of anything else aftermarket or original equipment that can be fitted to the front and provide more cfm than the above, though there might be something out there.

The 16" craig davis fans are good but need to be between the radiator and teh engine not infront of teh radiator. If infront you will find that the cooling will be about 15-20% less. I had this issue not so long ago and so mounted it between rad and engine and teh difference was amazing. The clearances everywhere are not nice though. If I was to do it again I would grab 2 KE laser thermos and use them. They are approx 13" diameter and they move a hell of alot of air. most wreckers have them for approx $30 each and all you then need is the wiring up of them and away you go. Make sure you have a bloody good battery and alternator for these as they will require good power supply.

Cheers

thanks guys

Definately have to do something that will push or pull a lot of air through for driving in summer.

The 2 smaller laser ones would definately be an option and can possibly squeeze them in between the radiator and motor(will have to check measurements). And the price for them is also helping!!!($30 each...i'd still have some cash left over for beer!!)

Do they need any shroud?

Would these work if mounted on the front of the radiator?(obviously not as well but if space between rad and motor wont permit)

cheers
Sam

Not sure about in front but I cannot see why reversing the polarity of the wiring would not work. The laser ones come with a inbuilt shroud, (like the craig davis ones have) so no need for a shroud. the main reason for between the rad and motor is the fact that they draw better etc. When on front you are pushign air not pulling it thus it tends to want to escape from teh radiator rather than go through it. If on the engine side the air gets draw to the fan and thus has already gone through the radiator.

Cheers

How much space do you have between the radiator and the engine?
Not familiar with the laser fans, but 13in is also a falcon fan, which two of should do the job.
The exact cooling reqs of a modified engine is really a bit of a guestimate and wont really be established until you try things out. You could be fortunate and have 2 small fans do the job, or still have issues with the biggest fans available.

To shroud or not to: the fans will always work better with the shroud. The shroud itself will restrict normal ram cooling.
ie the fans + shroud may keep it cool at idle, but the shroud may cause a restriction on the highway.
Oldn64, most original equipment fans arent suited to reverse operation, generally because the fan blade is not able to be reversed on its spindle when the motor is driven in the opposite direction, which needs to be done or the fan is extremely inefficient.
Also with the higher power fans the motors are of open cooling design and dont lend themselves to facing the elements.
There is a lot of stuff said re pushers versus pullers, but next to no subjective testing that ive ever seen, only claims that pullers work best.
My own thoughts on the matter are that one fan blade and motor combo works equally poorly from both sides or works a lot better from one side than the other.
Either the gearing and fan blade are designed for hot air, or for cold air, or they are a compromise between the two.

A good (14in?)cheap fan in front of the radiator would be the air con fan off a vr-vs.Smaller than the 16in baco fan I had but flowed as much(2100cfm),it worked very well on a 360 in a vh charger also tried it on my lc.
