Quick question..
Are the plastic LC tail light surrounds actually chrome plated? Or painted to appear that way.

Hey dannylxss

Better keep an eye out on your number plates as some wag might change the "L" for a "F" :spoton: :tease:

question thats kind of relevant to this.

What is the best paint to use to give as similar appearance as possible to a blackout surround and that grey/silver line that runs across the light (x2).

I have a standard silver one currently ...

Cheers

G'day All

I think you will find that only GTR & XU-1 tail lights have the black surrounds and S/SL are the chromed ones.

To paint the polished surface you would need to use an "etcher" coat first, then primer, undercoat then final coat. That's if you want a top finish.

An etcher coat will actually allow a piece of glass to be painted.

You will also probably find that the black parts of the Torana is a gloss and is the Torana colour Warrigal Black.

Hope this helps, regards ........... Barry

There were 3 types of rim assemblies, and 2 types of outer lenses fitted to LC's.

The rim assembly has a chrome plated die cast housing for all, with no painted inset on 4 cyl "S" and early "De-Luxe" models, a white satin painted inset on 6 cyl "S" and later "De-luxe" 4cyl, and a black painted inset on all "SL" and "GTR" models including XU1's.

The outer lenses are the same for all except for "SL" and "GTR" models which are painted white in the 2 horizontal grooves.

There is also a listing for export lenses which have white instead of amber for rear indicators, and use a red instead of amber side repeater lens.

Grant et al,

As with many parts and paint schemes, the tail-light surrounds can be deceptive.
Grant is nominally correct but we have found a wide variety of combinations on differing models.

Full Chrome, Full Black Satin and Black Satin in the recess of the surround (no part # AFAIK).
Chrome on GTR is as common as Black.

In this vein, S and SL have the horizontal bar of the grill colour coded - as do many Adelaide GTR's..........

G'day All

Basically what has been said is correct but I might like to add a part of a letter that I recieved from a fella that worked at Acacia Ridge until it finished production in 1984.

Ron wrote

Dear Barry,
Not a lot of the old GMH blokes still around in this area, I am one of the few, I was with the company from 1957 until the close in 1984, 1 worked on the Toranas, some operation on the control panel I think, no one did very much, only what could be done in a few minutes, it was hectic I can tell you. We called the GTR's "Country and Western" GeeTaR's.. You will be amused to know that we once built a 3 door Torana, 2 on one side and 1 on the other, it got as far as the trim section before it was discovered, it was then destroyed, we also built a Brougham/Premier, in that case only the vynil hood cover was wasted. It's unlikely that I can help you much with the project but I wish you all success with it.

Might be able to find some pictures if you are interested.
Cheers  Ron        ,

This is why some cars will differ from the norm and don't forget that they may have also been ordered that way.

If some cars differ from the "norm", it may have been because of the hectic pace at which the cars were being assembled and it may have been because on a "Monday" some worker may have had a hard weekend or on a "Friday", a worker may have been thinking of the "hard" weekend he was going to have.

So ! Mistakes were made.

This may not have not cleared up the discussion on what car did or did not came out with but it surely will explain why there were some differences.

Regards ......................... Barry.

PS This is the same fella that sent to me an Acacia Ridge Inspectors Dust Coat. :spoton: Sorry about the bloke wearing the dust coat, car is not too bad tho'.

i agree, the info is from the parts book and observations of various models, but as is the case with a lot of LC/LJ parts there can be variations, different factories, early vs late versions as well as ones that have been modded or repainted etc.
The listing is specific for the all chrome surround being for "S" and "De-Luxe" models, my old LC GTR and the "SL" parts car had black in the recess of the surround, this ties in with the listing under these models in the parts book.

I know the whereabouts of a 3-door HQ Pano... one drivers door then two on the passenger side... and of course the back doors.
