Collapsible steering column pin

As the title says I'm in the process of refurbing the column and the shear pin is broken!i had it in mind to machine one up out of nylon,any one got any better ideas

Hi Phillip
No better ideas except use Delrin (original material) if you can get it instead of nylon. There are two sheer pins and they aren't very big in diameter so will be interested to hear how you get on with making them.
They will need to be a neat fit and I would leave extra protruding on either side of the shaft so you can heat and mushroom or flatten the ends to prevent any chance of them coming out.

If all else fails don't worry about the sheer pins, the steering column will still perform perfectly without them.

A friend of mine consulted an engineer and was advised to use soft aliminum, apparently it has a suitable sheer strength.
He did do this but later sold the car anyway.
