Hi there I have a lx slr just built a 355 for it, now that its running the oil pressure drops to zero at idle and when it does I can hear the rocker gear getting noisy, so get the rev's up a bit and they go quiet again, have replaced oil pump to a high volume even tried a std oil pump and all do the same, so its obviously not the oil pump, could it be the lifters, they are brand new crane hydrolic's.

oil pick up tube and gasket. if there is a crack in it or leak in the tube or gasket, can cause probs like that.

What lifters are you using?

What clearances did you set your bearing clearances too? Cam will have to be spot on that's where the oil is fed to first,

High volume pumps are rubbish in my opinion, stick with a standard pump but it might pay to try shimming up the relief valve spring on th pump with a 100thou shim (2mm)
This will bump the oil pressure up,

As ozyozyozy said could also be the pickup tube. Until you pull it down and go over it with a fine tooth comb you probly won't sort this out,

Happened to my 355 a couple of years back. Turned out the pressure drop was through the cam bearings, I lost 8grand in two hours of dyno time and the engine was stuffed :-)

Let us know what you find

Good luck with it

Hi thanks for that, the engine builder used slightly smaller cam bearings, they did this to increase oil pressure, the lifters are crane hydralic.

check the cam bearing to jounal clearance, is common to be loose on VN onward holden V8's, does exactly as you describe. goodluck

What's the Crane part number for the lifters? Crane have a few different hydraulic lifters available.

If you suspect a hole or crack or leak in the pick-up try adding a few extra litres of oil. Once the oil level gets to a point where it covers the air leak the symptoms will dissapear.A mate of mine discovered a leak in his pick up by doing just that.
