It is possible to convert to singler pahse although I would nto recommend it. this would mean the motor woudl not be nearly half of what it was in three phase form. Be cheaper and better in teh long run to buy the right signle phase motor or power the garage with three phase.. :D

Cheers

There are 3 options here.
1. Change the motor for a single phase unit. These can be picked up at the weekend markets fairly cheaply. I done that last year, got a motor for $40 and it works a treat.
2. If you want to keep the 3 phase motor get a single to 3 phase converter (ive sold quite a few of them over the years)
3. replace the whole compressor unit.

you cant physically change the motor to single phase, but you can run it off single phase using a couple of capacitors, it works in theory but i havent tried it myself.

in theory communism works, just get 3 phase put on the house / shed, and get a new 3 phase motor
plenty more torque and actually cheaper to run than its single phase copunterpart
you can then invest in that 3 phase drill press, lathe etc that youve always wanted
cheers

yeah your better off spending $20,000 to get 3 phase to your house.

Single phase 2 3 phase inverter is about $500!

The capacitor method uses 2 certain sized caps to give you the different phase angles for three phase power.

How big is the 3 phase motor? If bigger than 3hp buy another compessor, unless you have plenty for power. Problem with using a sigle phase motor if to big, is the starting current (6X running current), will dim everything on start. Then you have to unload the compessor under start. Electric motors are cheap as, all made in high street china. You can put on 3phase on (around $4000 min, to the avg house)or use a VF drive, run anything expect a welder $$$.
