Is this a viable alternative to hydraulic power steering??

http://www.unisteer....r_steering.html

There are some other mobs that do it as well.

Opinions, thoughts??

The main problem with electric power steering setups are that they usually do not change the steering ratio.

It is also debatable whether they can put too much stress on the manual rack and linkages.

For a torana? Hydraulic is a little high tech, EPS is out of this world..... Eating steak was the 70's fix.

I like the idea of the kit, but as above it may put too much stress through the input shaft of the manual rack and you have the option to reduce the steering wheel size to take advantage of the assisted steering. Also I don't know how good the quality of the control system and motor is. Feedback on someone who's tried it would be best.. If it works and its reliable, I like it...

Holden Astra diesel and late Corollas have electric power steering. The Astra's alt fails prematurely IMHO. Is this due to the extra load from the steering?
On the Corolla, the unit failed.

Holden Cruze (the 4x4 one) had eps, and some Barina's too (the re-badged Opel Corsa c). The Opel Corsa unit is the most popular for conversions, I've seen a few (no Toranas but). I'm still thinking of fitting this kit - http://www.ultimate-...ersteering.html to my Caravelle.

theres a few of the targa guys starting to use various electric p/s pumps. they seem to be happy with them.
can be a good alternative for some people to help with packaging of components in an engine bay.

Hey guys,
The HQ is getting an electric steering setup!

It's an Astra pump mounted in the boot and powered from the battery (also in the boot)

Steering is a reconditioned HQ standard steering box, and the lines and just plumbed to suit!

Easy as pie :)
Haven't driven it yet though, still getting some other stuff done!

I didn't think a pump was required? Not on a manual steer torana anyway?

Hi chop,
We wanted power steer and had the hq setup from wayne blown308,
I have always been concerned about cavitation on high revs with an engine driven pump, not to mention the mess in the bay and parasitic losses.
This electric setup solved the lot!
