I am about to buy a new harmonic balancer for a dragrace only red 202.

I am tossing up between a Ross Tuffbond balancer or a Powerbond one.

I have used a Ross balancer in the past on a SBC, and was very happy with it.

Has anybody here had experience with both?

What were your experiences ?

Which did you prefer?

Why?

Also,if you have compared them between 186s and 202s,were there any differences in their performance or reliability?

Thanks guys.

I have used both of the balancers that you mentioned. I fitted a Ross balancer to a 202 that was used in a speedway car which was seeing 6200 rpm. About 18 months after it was fitted, the ring had spun in the same fashion that std balancers spin. I contacted Ross & they didn't want to know about it, so I fitted a Powerbond balancer which was raced for some 5 or 6 years then later fitted into my LJ 2 years ago, & that balancer was only removed to fit the heavier ATI balancer.

I;m running a Romac balancer on both the racecar and the orange one.

Racecar buzzes to 7k+ every now and then (depending how foot happy I get :D )

Has done a handful of track days and drag days so far with no problems (touch wood)

The only downside is the reduced egnine-radiator clearance (But thats going to be a drama no matter what you do)

Is that a Romac to suit a 6 or something you modified?

Radiator clearance is no issue....Im not using one.

Just checked the Romac site.

I will give them a call.

Has anybody had a problem with these?

Romac is what Mark used, but he was keen to see the set up on mine at the 6 bangers, but unfortunately that wont be happening. You can have a look at my ATI balancer next week at Warwick.

Yup, made to suit

AND they aren't overly expensive either.

I'm using the Powerbond Race Series Balancer, and have used the same type on engines before with no real dramas...my next balancer I thought I might give the Pro Race Balancer a run as they seem better constructed!

You've got to make serious horsepower before you have to worry about balancers.
You'll be right with a stocky balancer................ :tomaatit:

I probably would have used one of these if I had known about them.

i have been looking at those pro race ones on ebay, but i wasn't sure as there was bugger all info in the ads. didn't even think to look for a website!

so on the specs on the website, would Wgt. be weight? in lbs? or something else?

I have run a pro race balancer for a couple of years it weighs 4kgs and have had no problems . They are repairable if damaged. And really shop around for price I saved $70 .

We used a Romac for 10+ years on a 235 stroker no probs, gone the tried and true root with the new 202. Personally i think the pro-race is a bit heavy for an allout drag car but whatever you use make sure it has a safety ring, i've seen holes in bonnets from std ones. Not a bad idea to bolt them on aswell. jmo

I once fitted a Chev balancer to the std red balancer... bolted on like it's sposed to be there. With my new 202 I fitted a Powerbond unit. The only issue being... the lines are bloody hard too see, I've had to paint marks on the very edge right beside the belt. It's too new to know about longevity.
