hey have just installed new roller rockers and set valve lash 3 times, still a ticking/knocking sound coming from top of heads. take rocker covers off and can wiggle the rockers on the cylinders near TDC. Lifters are anti pump up but once again have set valve lash properly and there was no play AT ALL in any of the rockers at TDC.SO shouldnt the pump up make them harder if anything??? Engine performs very well apart from that ticking/knocking sound. Is this normal with roller rockers and should I be able to wiggle the roller rockers ony cylinders near TDC????/

if you can "wiggle" any roller rocker from side to side a say that its had it.
hydrolic lifter pre load is not a lash setting, it is PRE LOAD and is set with the valve fully closed and should depress the lifter approx 1mm or 40thou. and be on the part of the cam with no lift.
should make no diff with anti pump ups.
never been a fan of anti pump ups tho.
are rollers rolling true accross the top of the valve and not accross the edge.

what are you setting the lifters at,

All the anti pump ups ive had set them at 0 lash, some people dont like anti pump ups some do... personally i like them, but ive had solid and anti pump ups...

They do work very well and yes mine made a ticken noise as well, but also reved and made power up to around 7800 rpm.. so l couldnt complain, specially by the big black marks left behind

but yes most anti pump ups are set at 0 lash.. so 0 not 1 or 40 thou or anything like that... 0 thats how they work... crane and a number of other brands

hydrolic lifters as compaired to solid lifters run with preload meaning that there is no lash or gap but the valve spring actually puts a load on the lifter and depresses it slightly. hydrolic lifters are designed to run correctly this way, this ensures that the auto adjustment is kept ion check.
in any case refer to the settings of the maker of your cam and or lifter.
i assume running zero "lash" will make will make them noisy at idle etc.
i dont like anti pumps because they have a reputation of bleeding down at low RPM.
very high RPM i would just run solids if i was worried about a hydrolic lifter going solid on me.

yeh they're noisey at low revs and fine at higher revs. setting the valve clearance, lash, preload and tappets are all terms used for doing this ALX76.they have been set so the pushrods will not move between my fingers then another half turn. Yes have checked that the roller tip is in correct contact with the top of valve.they make good power up to 7000.

you dont say wether 6 or 8.
6 is easy to check pre load, pull covers and check for depression.
8 is more involved as u have to remove intake manifold.
it may be in your best interest to check it out.
here is a link that best describes tappets.

if the problem is not preload then i would say a dirty or worn lifter.
lifters can be cleaned.
this is not to say its the only cause, just the most likley.
if its quiet when cold and noisy when hot it could be bleed rate.

its an 8. Ive pulled the intake manifold twice already and i don't make the same mistake 3 times so im starting to think its a stuffed lifter. thanks for info guys.

Whats your oil pressure like at idle? Anti pump-ups are designed with bigger tolerances to let them bleed down at high rpm as not to hold the valves open. The down side is rattle at idle. Try a different oil. Years ago I ran in an engine on Valvoline and then changed to GTX with instant lower oil pressure at idle.

oil pressure is approximately 45psi at idle and under full engine load changed to approximate 55-60psi. Im using 20-50 oil.

yeh,im going to strip it back again tomorrow and check each lifter. I have a funny feeling i may have accidentally grabbed a solid lifter or two that was mixed up with my hydraulics, and put that in. I did have them near each other in a box.
