Had the same thing happen to me but thankfully I didn't call back. I even had the phone in my hand and couldn't answer it in time. One ring and then they terminate the call and your mobile phone displays the details of a missed call. Surely Telstra or the Dept of Fair Trading can do something about these people.

We got the list of numbers today at work as well. It's no hoax - ie. this is a real scam. I had a missed call from an (02) number (split second ringing) a few weeks back, but luckily never returned the call either. A few mates have returned the calls, and got a recorded message saying you've won a prize or something.. I guess they can expect big bills this month....

We deal closely with Telstra at our work, and I heard some people are now fully investigating this.... no idea if that means anything can be done or not, but I sure hope so. What a pain in the ass. As for the idiots behind it - I hope they get what's coming to them :furious:

This was one of the replies on the "other' website:
"You do have to press 1 to accept the charges after it craps on for ages with a discamer... It is a party/chat line run by Mediatel. http://www.mediatel.co.uk/

I wouldnt stress... charging you $100 a call is a tad bill illegal... the ACA would not of issued the indial range if it was being used like this... As the indial range are all Austalian FFN's then they have to abide by the laws of the ACA. As far as im aware the only number range that has been set aside for premium calls and SMS is 19XX"

Does anybody know of anyone being charged $100 for actually dialling the number and letting it answer? If this is the case the scam would have to be telstra based, they would also have something to gain by being able to charge for this service of apparently normal numbers getting stung.

I got a missed call from an 02 number last month, i rang it back thinking it could be some one of these forums trying to call me as iv left my number on a few posts, i got like said above some party line so i hung up, got my bill and no charge of $100..

Devil sounds your spot on in this case, ACA wouldnt allow this..

hey guys, same thing happened here, lucky im on a pre paid cap coz if something did happen all it would have eaten was credit, when i called back it said that i had won a prize and that i had to ring a 1902 number to claim it, i thinkk thats when you get stung, as i tried to call that too lol (idiot) but calls to that number were not allowd from my mobile, so guys if you have rung back the 02 number dont stress im pretty sure nothing happems except for an interstate call, its when you ring the other number that you may get stung something

Telstra are pigs, my mate got billed 3 grand cause his PC rang a dodgey number automatically and telstra said there was nothing they could do.. so he is now in debt.... what great australians they are

Thats called "Internet Dumping" and if your mate didn't click "Agree" or "ok" then a independant connectoid would not have been installed.
I worked In Fraud/Security at a major ISP for a while, and the people that blame the ISP for "Internet Dumping" should have a good hard look at themselves because they authorised the install of the software - Not the ISP!!!!!

People - Read the Sh1t before you agree to it!!!!!!

There would be no Viruses, there would be no spyware, there would be no internet dumping if people used a bit of common sense on the net.
I swear, the most intelligent people, when they sit down at the PC, take their brain out and sit it next to them :<_<:

Also - this is a Scam.
I've had emails from mobile Department Managers of 2 of the major Telco's with examples of the charges. we tested it from work but only got a $50 charge from one of the numbers.

PS - its not really a scam - You Ring THEIR number and agree to THEIR conditions so why not add another bullet to your already shot to sh1t foot :D

Cheers

G
