whilst using 2K ive been told you just shoot the primer straight onto bare metal, but i spend the extra and apply 2K etch first.
am i wasting money (about $70 a litre) or is it good practice.

I think you could be forgiven just surface-priming small isolated areas of bare metal but if it's the entire body or sizeable panels, etch-priming would be the go.

Its true, you can shoot 2K primer filler straight over bare steel the same way you can with Acrylic.
It wont hurt it to Etch prime the steel, it is another process( although not necessary ) that will help protect from future rust and might give your paint a more stable base.
Its up to you, if you can afford the epoxy etch primer then its a recommended process. I personally think its a good idea as long as its an epoxy etch primer.

mate i'll sell you a top quality etch primer, 20l drum for a 120 bucks, go to a engineering supply place and they wil help you out, look for a hichem dealer

We use etch prime on bare steel as a base on all the cars at work,
and was the recommended practice in my TAFE training as well,
the etch prime is supposed to bind better to the steel and slow any formation of rust.
the real question is,
how long do plan keepng the car you are painting?
If you want to paint to sell, dont bother,
if you are planning on keeping as your pride and joy,
I think the extra cost would be worth it,

my whole car is etched primed inside and out after sandblasting/paint stripping. we used ppg 2 pak etch primer.expensive but it will pay for itself in years to come.

How about using POR15 on bare metal? Its supposed to protect the metal from rust
