Pros - Overdrive was great, cheap to replace, and running a trans cooler i never had any problems with heating or slipping.
Cons - They are a bloody tight fit. Hope you have tiny hands for the top bolts. And the location of the speedo sensor requires a cable ratchet type shifter to use the 321 option. I had a VT shifter with the big metal linkage and it fouled on the speedo sensor when trying to downshift.

It will help me no end in deciding if i should go down that path.
I figure 2 pedals instaed of three will help with the six inch heels......

Certainly strong enough for a mild 308.
I was uninspired by the box in my VY ss but after fiddling with its shift characteristics (electronics only) its quite a nice thing to drive.
Only real con is the cost of changing from your current configuration.
I must admit its on my list of probable changes for the sedan.

Rexy there is no conversion cost at this stage, car is a shell. Engine off to the builder this week so need to make the call. No ecu either, i'm thinking the manual box from the VN

You can get a 90deg adapter for the speedo drive so no problem there.
they can handle decent HP up to around 7-800 if built right
get an older 30spine one from before the electronic versions and change to hydraulic lock up converter control rather than electronic
2 problems
You MUST get the TV cable set up properly, best done with pressure gauge
big change in 1-2 gear ratio (my only dislike)
Other than that good box

I'm running a TH700 behind my 355.
Pros - Overdrive is fantastic! Pretty SImple Box, fairly strong if you can get a good builder. The change over costs were minimal. Crossmember & Tailshaft (The Yoke is actually the same spline yoke as Trimatic). You can also run a lock up clutch (I haven't hooked mine up yet). But this will further bring down the RPM in top gear. Fitting wise, I found mine easier to fit than a trimatic! Not sure if it was just the location of the top bolt of the bell housing, but it was easier to bolt up and seemed to be better balanced sitting on the jack!
Cons - Getting the TV Cable Set Up... (The GTS, I'd love to know more about using a pressure gauge!). I thought I had mine all set up perfectly... But last time I drove it some problems came up again... I'm hoping all is ok and I have stuffed anything becuase the TV cable wasnt set 100%. Also it's slightly heavier, but I would say probably only like 5-10kg...
Hope that helps!

I need one of these, any idea who sells them?
Oh and the t700 was an easy fit (besides speedo drive), should be nice on the highway in 4th....

If you increase the Pressures in the box you need lock the adjuster on the tv cable better than stock or it will pull itself back and you will flare between gears and it will crap itself in no time at all .Good box otherwise .Used one in Cruiser conversion and after the TV adjustment was sorted it has stayed together well .You can run 3.25 ratio and still get reasonable engine rpm at cruise in OD and be quick off the mark .

Whereas the 4L80 is a 3L80/TH400 with an extra
Its not that simple though
4L80 was usually reserved for such things as Suburbans etc that needed the extra to stay alive in more serious duty
You'd have to put one beside a TH400 to gauge its size... the TH400 is a tightish fit but certainly goes into a Torana without any floor mods

The main positives on the t700 for me is in the low first gear to assist with 15 inch rims and a 2.6 or 3.08 diff; the .7 overdrive for highway cruising which I do a lot of.
The third and final positive is only to assist with peak hour stop start driving that the car will have to handle.
A minor win is its cheaper to go the auto route at this stage than a five speed.
My concerns are some people consider the 700 not up to a strong 8, and the bolt up issues which appear to be minor.
I believe jegs do a b&m t700 to suit street strip in Chevs for 1800 , plus freight. At our $$ conversion it looks good.
Car is still set up for a manual, so I need t o make the call this week.
Dave, who built yours and when ? What sort of $ are you thinking of?
Datto, can you get b&m stuff through your mob ?

I wouldnt buy a b&M one from jegs as there are better places and a lot of upgrades you can do which increase strength, performance and also make them little more efficient.
you will also need to check the geometry of the carby bracket, bit of bad luck there welby as I just binned all my old brackets.
I cant see how these things would be getting difficult to find as there must have been many v8 commodores around with them in VN etc
for me I am looking for something with a better 1-2 gear ratio change, possibly a TH200. Apparently the 4L80 in a very big and heavy box so i stopped looking into that
look up sonnax, trutectrans.com etc

Wet 88 kg
4L80
Dry 104 kg
Wet 115 kg.

It would be worth checking how far below the centreline the oil pan is. The 4L80 appears to have a much deeper pan than the 4L60. Ground clearance could be an issue in a Torana.

a good one is hard to find i should have statedMine was built by welshpool auto's to handle 500hp which i dont think is enough for my new engine.

#@$^%& ones to suit rebuild are stacked 10 deep at the local tip
but yeah there are model specific to just vn/p
after that they go computer controlled and start being harder to set up in earlier cars
