If they have never been removed and still have the original rivets, then I wouldn't remove them.

Personally i would because you can buy new rivets if you have rust around that area wouldnt it be better to clean under the tags as well imo

If your sending it off to a panel shop for body repairs and paint then seriously consider removing them so they can't go walkabout.
Other Forum members have reported bits and pieces going missing while their cars have been in for repair/resto work.

If you do remove them take plenty of pics of the tags (and the rest of the cars ins and outs) before removal so you can provide the pics to a new owner if you ever decide to sell the car.

Don't YELL :P

Take lots of pics (video is better) showing the tags of the car.
Firmly explain to th owner of each shop that you have physical evidence of the tags and other parts on the car, and you are holding them personally responsible to ensure that nothing goes walkabout. Make sure they know that should anything happen, your insurers will be claiming against the full cost to replace the parts or h vehicle with like if needed.

Take a video, post it with the numbers in your build thread, then if someone tries to rip you off, just show the thread to a solicitor and they'll do the rest.

mecko hi all my xu1 toranas exept 1 have had there 3 tags removed, and put away in the safe, all documented
why u ask, thats simple once there stolen your car looses great value, not only that your pride and joy has gone its simple as that, people on this forum say if the tags are removed the car looses its value, well i can tell u that is totally untrue, in my many years buying and selling toranas, ive removed id tags for safety reasons, and have never had an issue when sold, some of these cars were over the 3 digits,
when i bought a 4 door A9X which we still own from qld i flew up and removed the 3 id tags, flew home the same day before i got it transported back to melb,
many years ago i put my xu1 to det some repaird done at a local panel shop, and yes the 2 front tags were stolen, it took me 2 weeks to finally find out who stole them, with a little perswasion,if u know what i mean????? from that day i looked at these cars differently, dont be afraid to remove your tags
my 2 bobs worth
aldo

I don't see any problem in removing them when there is obvious proof that the tags belong to the car. In my case the tags had never been off my SS but I removed them as I didn't want to take a chance in them getting damaged while the car is worked on or being misplaced at a panel shop. I can't see insurance being any help as once those tags are gone they are not coming back. In my case I have the original owners manual which shows all the original numbers plus I took photos before I removed them. So in my case I found it was far safer to remove them till all work was finished. My option tag still has the original paint on it, I'm thinking it will probably go back on with the original paint. Anyway in your case with the car going to various places and it being an SLR I'd remove them for sure.

I removed mine before i took it to the panelbeater/painter, it's not that i didn't trust him just i didn't want them lost if he had to take them off to do some rust repairs in that area.

At the moment they are sitting in a safe place waiting to be put back on, that will be the last job i do.

Take them off m8. Especially if it going away to sit at a panel shop for god knows how long. I removed mine before paint although I still had a foul taste in my mouth from my SS tags been stolen. It's a good idea though to take some pics with them on there. Also if you do what I did and cleaned my plates up to a polished/mirror finish , it's good to take pics of the paint removal from the tag. Like me you will probably see the evidence of a few paint jobs on the tag. Lol

Agree, take em off and buy the correct rivots to put em back on later..having the tags stolen or lost is worse then removing them. Be careful taking them off too! try not to enlarge the rivot holes or damage the plate when removing it.
