Hi all,

I'm wanting to get my seatbelt buckles dismantled to get them rechromed, how do i get the top satin piece off the chrome piece without tooo much carnage.

I see there are new repro seatbelts out, Large Buckle Type. My car is 73 Adelaide built LJ XU1, but i dont see a repro set of small buckle type. Only the larger buckle, which is in my centre rear seat. Does any1 know of 73 series small buckle belts availability?

thanks,

Jason

Jason,

Pics of your belts/buckles may be helpful.

Cheers

Dave.

These older threads may help with identifying the seatbelts you need.

Also, I had a need to dismantle one of the smaller type (something had been put in the buckle which shouldn't have been). Was just a matter of gently levering two small ish tabs located on the side of buckle that then allowed the top to simply lift off. Surprisingly very simple and easy. Can't post any photos at present due to being away.

Hi all, The seat belt buckles pictured are what i have on my rear seat, the large is in the centre, the small one on each side. I am led to believe that this is correct for 1973 adelaide built cars.

My front belts are incorrect and will need to source the correct buckle hardware, if any one has any they wish to part with, the small buckle type as pictured, they are going to a good home.

after i've sourced & tidied up all the bits then i'll get them rewebbed.

Thanks

Jason

Previously read about the thoughts of the rear lap/sash being small buckles and the centre being the larger flat style, but wondering if this has been confirmed, If so does anyone know the thinking behind the original idea.

My thought on having a different size buckle in centre, than the others could be so that u couldnt mix up & plug in2 the wrong 1.

You could be right, though I have seen a photo of a LC SL 4 door with three of the same "Cooldrive" buckles in the rear. Not that I could say they were originally fitted of couse.

Similarly on guitar straps.

Similarly on guitar straps

You can buy both new repro style and original GM belts from the States that are in a similar profile and size as that used on that guitar strap.    In some cases the belt and guitar strap buckles are genuine original buckles that are being sold in new markets, clothing accessories etc.

The 64 - 67 Chevelle had that small type belt buckles and these are very "similar" to the GMH ones in the some Torana's and other Holdens.

The main difference (other than the Australian Safety markings) is that the GM buckle is "back to front" to the Aussie one.

With the GMH belt the clasp pushes into the "flat" end of the buckle,  whereas in the GM belt the clasp pushes into the "sloped" end of the buckle.

I have seen photos of a set of belts made by a prominent Australian seat belt repairer and they have used the a buckle like the American GM belts and I'd say there would be no problems thinking they were the  correct GMH belt, especially if the correct centre label was applied.
