dont get straight cuts unless you need them, pay hundreds to make your motor whine but would spend the same to get rid of a annoying diff whine lol

Maybe the oil needs to be directly away from the gears slightly. I'm not sure but I think people do the opposite to quiten them.

why would you want noisey timing gears?

restrict the oil squirter (or block it off..) and you'll have noise

I had straight cuts in my old ski boat and ran it for 5 years....never once did they make any noise like I was expecting.  Geez I was glad too :)

I had some in a stock 149, I think they were Rollmaster. They were reeeeeeeeally irritating.

Kind of embarrassing too - I'd whine into a servo or whatever and blokes would be like "jeez what you got in that mate?" thinking it's a big-block or something and I'd go "cough mumble just a stock 149...."

They got swapped out pretty quickly.

It's also a bit embarrassing when you're revving the guts out and the car doesnt move half as fast as the people watching expect it to.

It was pretty quick - low nines over the quarter.

Minutes, that is...

I don't think you'd want them noisier than that designed, as excessive noise => wear => bits of metal scraping through your oiling system

6cyl or v8? I had some on a old stock 202 and could barely hear them. I think they may get louder the bigger the cam and heavier the valve springs are .

I was under the impression the noise was caused by air escaping from the teeth, not wear......

Cheers.

pretty sure they work off clearances, the more clearance they have the more they whine, had a set in an old 186 never could hear them,  gave them to a mate to put on his 202 the same set where very loud.

if you where to line bore the block they can drop the bar down a bit to creat the centre of the main caps a bit lower thus giving your straight cuts more backlash. many motors from cast will have slightly different distance between the centre of cam position and the main caps, thats why some motors will sound louder with the gears.. mine have been in for alomost two years, not to many k's but wouldn't say they have gotten louder.

Never understood why people like them, they are mechanically too harsh imo and I can't see the benefit. If you want the annoying whine far better with a gilmer belt system. For me to advertise that I had some mumbo under the hood I would rather put more bark in the exhaust (when you hit it hard), rather than put up with that whine. .

Was looking for quiet straight cut timing gears for the wild six,

and discovered this thread and these torque adjusting +/- 6 degree gears:-

seems the oil needs to be lubricating them well to be quiet :driving:
