Hi Guys,

was giving the air compressor a good work-out today and it started making some funny noises and a burning smell.

Nothing had seized but it wouldn't start again after letting it cool for 15mins.

Took the cover off the control box on the electric motor and found this. Looks like goo is spilling out of the white container.  Do I just buy another white thingy or does it mean there is a bigger problem.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

Marty

I'd be taking it back mate, you haven't had it long have you?

I wouldn't touch that goo either, probably not good for you.

Oh and I have no idea about your actual question  ;)

That my friend is a capacitor which helps get the motor running. It should have some writing on the side and yes you can buy replacements.

Regards

I've had this about ten years and got it second hand.  I did touch the goo but went and washed hands after reading post.

I does have writing on the side but what sort of shop sells these things. Does it need to be an original part or just one with the same ratings and fits in box?

Cheers

Martin

Jaycar  have some. Better off taking the old one in. Probably in a sealed bag. Correct rating and dimensions are needed to fit in the space and to get the motor going. If you post up the details of the writing on it I could source one online for you. Another place to try is RS components which deliver Australia wide

Try a new capacitor first (should be cheap) but if it craps itself again you may have a shorted auxiliary winding or the centrifugal switch is not switching the main capacitor out of circuit once up to speed (If this is the arrangement fitted which is most likely).

Have a read here, " http://www.allaboutc.../chpt_13/9.html "

Being over ten years old, the capacitor may have simply died of old age!

Thanks guys,

I'll take the old one in (wrapped up ) and see what they say.

I will be buying a new compressor soon because mine struggles to keep up but want a spare incase of a break down while painting the final coat.

Sorry mate I thought you got it recently.

I used to see that a lot on old PC's where a capacitor sh!ts itself and either swells up or worst case does what that one has done and throws its guts up.

That ones a bit bigger than I'm used to though.

Be careful capacitors store power even when the power is switched off. Just take the old one down to caps in Belmont they do them.

Cheers Dave

If you cant find them any where else, look at an airconditioning wholesaler, like Actrol or similar. Usually have a few different sizes sitting on the shelf. Dont be to miffed if you cant find the exact one, something with a similar capacitance should get the motor started.\http://www.actrol.co...art-Capacitors/

Thanks again for the help, I went to CAPS in Welshpool but they didn't have one suitable they sent me to New Era electrics in South Welshpool or north Armadale (felt like a long drive anyway and I was getting frustrated by then).  They had one for $35, got home fitted and is now working like a charm.

Still on the look-out for a 300plus free air compressor.

Marty
