I am 18. My first car, a 77 LX Torana Sedan, which is running a rather worked 202, seems to be going through my banjo single spinner diffs like theres no tomorrow.

I would like some help and information on a cheap, yet reliable diff conversion that isn't going to blow a massive hole in my pocket. As the police force is doing that for me as of late.

Obviously anything is stronger than a bango. The option of easy/cheap LSD centers would be an absolute bonus.

Thanks.

There os no such thing as a cheap conversion on a torana lsd bango might be a bit stronger but ease up on the clutch and go pedal and you might not blow so many bangos

Well perhaps i should have worded it as *Cheaper* then forking out $3000 for a 9inch conversion

Also... why is this in 'Engine'. Can someone please move this to Driveline. Thanks

Its in engine cause you put it there :)

But I've moved it

Cheapest is keep fixing the banjo

2nd best is BW out of a Skyline (right width) and have the mounts changed and axles sorted

2** series volvo diff.   torana stud pattern and approx 50mm narrower than standard. cut the mounts off your torana diff and weld them on the volvo.

Gives you disc brakes too.

Which is easier to find LSD centres for in decent ratios? R31 or Volvo?

I didnt think you needed to cut it down if it came from a r31, just change the stud pattern and mounts?

Use a standard width VN diff and bolt on some flares.

R31 is about 10mm wider each side?
I have spacers on each side so I could just take them off if it isn't sitting right.

Already have flares and the wheels site close

I tell ya what those Volvo diffs and up for wrecking are everywhere too. I'd be inclined to go the Volvo option

How much would i be looking at on average to pay to have my banjo diff mounts welded on to an R31 diff?

I want to cut the banjo mounts off and get them re-welded on to an R31 diff

This is a suggestion and others may be better at doing this the right way,

measure all the mountings from a Datum point on the original and transfer them to the other, tack the mountings in place and get a professional welder to fully weld them - make sure it is welded at opposite ends to keep the heat down. Dave I

p.s. IMO a standard Torana rear end with a Banjo LSD and 7" tyres works a treat

The thin is... In the long run it will work out cheaper for the R31 conversion then sourcing a banjo LSD, getting it rebuilt. Rebuilding every time it wears and then upgrading diffs anyway when i go down the V8 path

Aren't the banjo LSD clutch packs near impossible to get now?

Just sold my spare good nine inch for lh lx. Got $1500 for it.
I'd be looking for a good secondhand nine inch if I was you.

The BW78 and banjo LSD does not use clutch packs. The banjo and BW78 LSD use a steel cone which will not last anywhere near as long as a clutch pack LSD.

If you want traction from a BW78 then you would need to fit either a Lokka or a KAAZ.
