get a steering wheel puller, $10-$15 from most auto shops. Sure, there are a few techniques to getting them off otherwise, but all involve some risk in either bending the wheel, your nose or something else.
Youll get your moneys worth soon enough.

you need a steering wheel puller. You will never get it of just pulling on it...and I don't recommend hitting with a hammer.

While holding the steering wheel with one hand (12 o'clock) and your knees (8 and 4 o'clock) hit the retaining nut with a hammer (NOT TOO HARD!!) and she'll budge. Done it myself, it works.

^^^

Like above but I just loosen the nut until it is almost off then use a socket from a normal socket set that is big enough to fit over the shaft but still sit on the nut then hit that with a hammer, that way there is no damage to the shaft or nut and the wheel should pop off the tapered shaft (this is what keeps it in place and prevents you from pulling it off) but hit the nut before it hits your face :spoton:

Matt

I almost forgot remember to be careful and not hit to hard as these cars do have a collapsable steering column for safety in an accident, so long as you have firm, constant and even pressure on the wheel you should only have to give it a decent tap not belt the crap out of it.

Better Idea. Loosen the nut until it has two or three threads left in.

Sit in your driver's seat. And hit the wheel with a firm fist (not excessively hard) repetitavely. Might take 20 minutes if it's really stuck on there. But it will come off.

I've only done two. One car took about a minute and a half of firm fist whacks, the other took four firm fist whacks. :spoton:

Using pulling force is difficult, ineffective and dangerous.

i wouldnt recommende hitting the shaft or the wheel at all!

undo the nut and leave it a few threads on grab the sides of the wheel with both hands, plant both feet under pedals and pull yourself up with arms, pull on each side of the wheel until it pops off the splines, the nut will stop it

Why? Because of the collapsable steering column?

You can give that thing a decent hit with a hammer strait in the middle of the shaft and it won't go off. It is made to collapse in a SERIOUS impact.

Anyway, what harm could hitting the rim of the wheel do?

If you damage a wheel during this process (if done correctly), I can confidently say that it would not put up with a six months of daily use in a Torana with armstrong power steering with 205s on the front, and it's an utter piece of shit that is had-it!

I have only ever used very mild force during this process. So far it's always worked.

dont put words in my mouth and go on about it mate

there is no need to hit the shaft or wheel, it can damge them, simple and just not needed, unless your rough as guts :spoton:

One thing to mention about tapping the shaft is that the 3 breakaway capsules don't always break at the same time! One of my old LJ's capsules was already broken when I had to drop the column to get to wiring... Also, although yanking the wheel off a few times without damage isn't too hard, it doesn't mean the capsules aren't being weakened as a result! I's be using a puller when possible.
