Like above but I just loosen the nut until it is almost off then use a socket from a normal socket set that is big enough to fit over the shaft but still sit on the nut then hit that with a hammer, that way there is no damage to the shaft or nut and the wheel should pop off the tapered shaft (this is what keeps it in place and prevents you from pulling it off) but hit the nut before it hits your face
Matt
I almost forgot remember to be careful and not hit to hard as these cars do have a collapsable steering column for safety in an accident, so long as you have firm, constant and even pressure on the wheel you should only have to give it a decent tap not belt the crap out of it.

Sit in your driver's seat. And hit the wheel with a firm fist (not excessively hard) repetitavely. Might take 20 minutes if it's really stuck on there. But it will come off.
I've only done two. One car took about a minute and a half of firm fist whacks, the other took four firm fist whacks.
Using pulling force is difficult, ineffective and dangerous.

undo the nut and leave it a few threads on grab the sides of the wheel with both hands, plant both feet under pedals and pull yourself up with arms, pull on each side of the wheel until it pops off the splines, the nut will stop it

Why? Because of the collapsable steering column?i wouldnt recommende hitting the shaft or the wheel at all!
You can give that thing a decent hit with a hammer strait in the middle of the shaft and it won't go off. It is made to collapse in a SERIOUS impact.
Anyway, what harm could hitting the rim of the wheel do?
If you damage a wheel during this process (if done correctly), I can confidently say that it would not put up with a six months of daily use in a Torana with armstrong power steering with 205s on the front, and it's an utter piece of shit that is had-it!
I have only ever used very mild force during this process. So far it's always worked.

And if you missWhile holding the steering wheel with one hand (12 o'clock) and your knees (8 and 4 o'clock) hit the retaining nut with a hammer (NOT TOO HARD!!) and she'll budge. Done it myself, it works.

there is no need to hit the shaft or wheel, it can damge them, simple and just not needed, unless your rough as guts
