Hi Guys,

Many years ago I was running my 308 LX with HM tri-y headers and a 2" dual system.
I changed over to some HM L34 headers with the 2.5" secondaries and I fitted a twin 2.5" dual system. The increase in power was amazing, it was the best money I'd ever spent on it.

Question? As this was 18 years ago, and technology moves on, would I pick up any power by changing my extractors to Pacemakers etc.

As a side note I was thinking of HPC coating the old L34 headers before they die.
Thanks for any advice.
Cheers.

I have also had great success with those exact same pipes (L34 with 2.5" collector). I have also used the Pacemaker 1 3/4 Tri Y and it did end up making more top end but involved remaking the secondaries and collector in larger tubing.
Looking at an old engine dyno sheet, on a 400Hp 326 stroker I picked up 21Hp at the peak, but torque from 4000 - 5000 took a real dive. If you were using a 5000rpm convertor the Pacemakers would be a winner but if you have the L34 pipes already I would be inclined to stick with them.

I personally like the HPC or Jet Hot coating both for protection and performance. Not only does it look good on the outside but it protects the inside and reduces gas friction. The thermal insulation is good for a performance gain, despite what some may say. Go to your local drag strip and see how many fast cars use it.

It would appear so.... http://www.hmheaders...ew&productid=33
and

Even 10 years ago they weren't cheap though, note they are listed as POA.

Thanks Struggler for the info. I'll try HPC on the L34 headers.

I contacted HM about 18 month ago asking them about new 2.5" secondaries, he was amaized that I had some (2" secondaries were the standard size for an engine under 400HP back in those days). He said that they could make some but it would be expensive, and he said I'll call me back with a price! So, as per normal he didn't ring back.

Cheers.

I spoke with a Brenton (Brendon?) Hughes from HM a few months ago and they had a set in stock.

Cost is high for the 4 piece L34 headers as there are 6 flanges and alot of pipe work so labour and parts is way up on the normal headers.

Expect to pay about 1,400-1,600 for a set (memory is a little fuzzy).

Lucky I bought a set 18 years ago but still watered the eyes when I passed over the cash. (still not used)

As for HPC coating, I am not sold on that yet. I would do it to preserve the pipes and extra cool under bonnet temperature would be a bonus but I need to understand all the pros and cons.

Is there a place in SA with a good reputation is I will not sent it by freight inter state as I have had to many things go missing.

Cheers
