Ive just got myself a LH for a project car, but not sure on what the legal aspects are on engine upgrades. I hear I cant go larger than a 308/350.. does this crate motor look legal to run in an lh?

I'd fit a running standard 308 with the tranny, exhaust, tailshaft and diff you want in the end. Get it all legal, and then build a 350 out of the 308 later.

for the power you get out of 355 builds these days, if its a regular driver, there is no need to go bigger.

just my humble opinion

NCOP3_Section_LA_Engine_01jan2011_v3.pdf (see page 11)

In WA the LH-UC maximum naturally aspirated engine capacity formulae is

cc = tare x 5

Each licencing authority appears to have their own figure they like to use. The Perth Technical section like to use 1204 kg.

You should be able to argue that there figure is wrong and use a figure published by GMH.

Maximum engine capacity is based on the original tare of the model vehicle fitted with the largest engine available without optional accessories

The heaviest figure I have seen in print is for the A9X sedan which is 1306 kg in the book "60 Years of Holden" by Terry Bebbington.

Even some of the 6 cyl versions are heavier than 1204 kg.

LX Hatch owners manual

Naturally Aspirated Engine Capacity

1204 x 5 = 6020 cc 367 ci
1306 x 5 = 6530 cc 398 ci

I would fill in a light vehicle modification application for the 383 ci using the A9X tare and see if they give approval.

When I did my paperwork back before NCOP existed I put 383 on the papers

The guy who ran thru the papers with me at technical section (Reno) changed it to 350

His theory was twofold

1. 350 was a recognised engine size for a Chev... 383 is not... its a stroker size commonly known but not the base size for a production  engine

2. 350 was within the guidelines and less questions asked

So in my opinion... if your going to Chev it... call it a 350. If your going to use a Holden block with 308 or 5.0 cast on it... call it that

Whats on the inside doesn't need to be explained too much

Could this be considered lying by omission... maybe... but in reality no-one is going to check the engines displacement for rego or for insurance purposes.

Datto

Reno is no longer there .His wife won lotto and he left a couple of years back .Reno was there in 1982 when I was dealing with a ADR 27A  307 issue .He must have mellowed by the time you applied .I realise  LHPIG you don't have to comply with ADR 27A but he wouldn't budge on anything for me .If you are going to go 383 and are concerned at getting pulled up then use  a 400 block with the 2 core plugs .3 core plugs are a cert for 400 cubes .You can get a  350 crank with 400 mains which will be a neutral balance front balancer Need to use the 350 rods for strength .The external balanced front balancer is a dead giveaway for large displacement .I would have a 383 any day over a 400 cube  donk .They just pull and rev harder than a 400 .

But no harm in asking .

My father used to say : There are 3 things in life that  are going to give you grief. 1) little dogs .2) little men and 3) little engines .

I know Reno moved on

After his son was acquitted on the drug charges he breathed a big sigh of relief and got back on with living his own life and retired (for the most part)

Since he left rego has become more about having engineers sign off on things rather than the department making any decisions on their own

I stand by my previous statement though... only tell them what you have too

Datto ,

"I stand by my previous statement though... only tell them what you have too"

Yes I would agree with that statement whole heartedly .Swept volume though is easily done if you go overboard with the cube dept .Probably comes down to how well you behave on the road  to whether you will have many issues
