This is a bit off topic guys but I don't really want to join the Monaro forum if I don't have to. I have a 253 which I am told was taken out of a HT Monaro, Eng. No. 253H29511.

It's still a good strong motor, I drove around with it for about 5 years in a HZ sedan, treated it well and the guy I bought it from rekoned he'd recently had it rebuilt as standard. Only mods are a 350 Holley and extractors / exhaust.

Just thought I'd put it out there in case anyone is looking for it.

Cheers.

It isn't necessarily a HT Monaro engine, could be from any HT Holden except Brougham. It isn't normally the blocks out of these engines that are worth pretty good $, it is the accessories like: Valley cover, rocker covers, water pump, carby, timing cover and sump. The block is probably worth the same as most other 253's unless someone is in need of an engine number close to that one. Is it a 253 cast block or a bare cast (ie nothing on the side)?

I just had a look with the torch but couldn't see one but I seem to remember that it did. Before this I had a HP six in my previous car so I think I would remember if it didn't have 253 on the side. What's the difference... ? I was told that only the early ones had the Eng. No. beginning with 253 by another guy who was into such things.

The guy I bought it off was strict about numbers, I took him to mean that it was definitely an original Monaro motor. He had it in a HJ four door GTS and he had a HT Monaro with a 350 in the shed which he told me was not a factory 350.

He later told me (early to mid nineties) that he had sold the HT. That is why I ask. He is probably well known here or a past and/or present member of this site.

I have no idea if the motor came out of that HT. He was buying and selling alot of cars and parts back then, but it could do. It was a fairly low mileage motor he said and it looked and felt like it. Did they have the Engine No. on the tags back then... ?

It's a great motor, I'm not in a hurry to sell it. But I would sell it to the guy/girl who now has the car it came from, if it still exists, without hesitation.

I just thought the number should be on some kind of register.

Edit:

Sorry that should read... "He later told me (early to mid noughties) that he had sold the HT" ...etc.

It was somewhere between 2002 and 2008 that he sold it. Can't quite remember which time it was I saw him that he told me that.

It may well be out of a Monaro, but there is no real way to tell unless you can get old rego papers off him that show a chassis number, and then start getting the word around you are looking for a HT Monaro with chassis number X. Except to the owner of the car it originally came from it makes no difference if it came from a Monaro or a Belmont or a GTS or a Premier or a Kingswood. All HT-HG 253 engines are the same bar the low comp pistons on the L examples, they all start with 253H or 253L.

The very early 253's in early HT were blank on the sides, and the 308's had HP - same deal as EH red 6's ie blank for 149 and HP for 179. Your 253 is 28510 x 253 or 308 into HT-HG Holden V8 engines, so probably into the timeframe where they started putting 253 on the side, but I can't remember exactly when.

No worries.

It's not implausible that the original papers are still around, I just bought a fairly ratty UC 4 door that came with the original receipts showing engine number etc.

Anyway, my conscience is clear now. If I've still got it in 6 months or so it will be going in my next project.

Cheers
