Well i have finally got around to putting up a few photos of my latest little project.

About a year ago i bought a billycart/hotrod off ebay locally. It was advertised as a chevy confederate roadster cart, anyway got it for $200 and thought i could do something with it one day.

Here is a photo of it with the previous owner, it really wasnt any good for anything but the body as the wheels, frame etc were not too flash.

So a few weeks ago i thought it was time to get stuck into it.  i stripped the front and rear axles off as well as the guards and mocked it up with some old torana wheels to get an idea of how i wanted it to look i.e. lower.   it actually ended up MUCH lower.

null_zps31bbf47c.jpg

i had a really old go kart frame at home that i had also bought on ebay for about $100 and started to steal all the parts i needed. Bearings, rear axle, front stub axles and steering were all chopped off so i could make the new frame (chassis).

i ordered some 175/50-13 tyres online and got them fitted to the torana rims.   cut some 12mm plate and drilled to torana pattern and then welded some studs onto them to mount the wheels to the axle.  here is a photo of the wheel and tyre, almost fits inside my 19" commodore rim dish.

null_zps78372940.jpg

I set the body up on some 70mm timber which would set the rinal ride height and cut away the body until the axle sat where i wanted it at the rear. Front wheel was placed approx where i wanted it.

null_zpsd79b4441.jpg

Then i bought some steam pipe bends to make a drop axle., welded it onto the go kart stubs and sourced a couple of scooter front wheels and machined a few pieces to make them fit.   i wanted to try and use the existing front drum brake but to make it fit the stub axle would have to be machined down to about 12mm and i thought it might be too thin and eventually bend so it will just run a rear disc.

I had a 5hp briggs FUN POWER and torque converter trans so i sat it in to try and figure out where it would all fit. I cut the timber floor out at the back measured everything and then seat about making a whole new chassis from steel as the existing one was aluminium and i wanted to be able to weld bits here and there.

There it is with the exhaust i started to weld up, second pipe not grafted in yet.

I forgot to take alot of photos while putting the front end together but here are a few shots of it partly finished

and done except for the fake moon tank to hide the steering shaft.

Sits just right i think.  oh i havent got a photo but i chopped up and old steering wheel and got a metre of chain from bunnings, welded up my own chain steering wheel.

Yesterday i rolled it outside to get  some photos next to my wagon to show the scale, used an old mini beer keg for a moon tank.

Last night i mounted the brake caliper and connected throttle etc so maybe today ill take it out to my mums and give it a run in the paddock, should be good fun in the rain.

will post videos and more photos when i do something new. The plan at this stage is also to make a mini old school caravan from polished aluminium but with sides and no top to house a seat and esky. A mate of mine Jordan and i plan to take it to chopped rod and custom in october.

no idea if it can yet, i haven't driven it.  I am sure on mud it would have no problems!

The torque converter helps alot with accelleration without sacrificing top speed but with those big wheels it was always struggle.

One of my nephews has a 5 HP Briggs and Stratton engine in a go cart. It's much slower than his other one with a 90cc postie bike engine.

Pretty much done now, I'll start on a mini polished aluminum caravan now to tow behind it.

Caravan will be 40s, 50s style with no roof but will look complete from the sides. Going to make a seat and esky in the van.

i cheated, just bought dulux design rust paint from bunnings, really easy to use, painted a few coats of the base paint with iron particles and left it dry for a day or two, then sprayed the activator on with a pump spray bottle until it was nice and wet and dripping off all surfaces, left it 12 hrs and i had rust!  i then bought some water based satin clear laquer and painted it on. That photo was before the laquer but it sealed it up great, no rust on your hands anymore and hardly changed the look at all.

You should chuck in a big block 11hp. I've got one on an old generator. It shakes the ground.

I have made some progress on my caravan. I had 3/4 of a sheet of 2mm alloy at home but it wasn't enough to cover both sides so I decided to paint it instead. Next step will be to trim the corners, upholster the seat and sort out an esky to go in the back hatch. Then fake windows and some tail lights, number plate etc.

Made some more progress over the last few weeks.

Ive replaced the carburettor, disconnected the governor and installed another petrol tank, installed a chain idler sprocket and it is running nicely.

I tried it today pulling the caravan and 2 people and it did pretty well. I made up some aluminium door panels i guess you could call them, cut some sheet, drilled some 25mm holes and made a punch set on the lathe to give them some style.

Caravan now has an esky and slide out gas canister BBQ in the rear. I had to make some spats so i could cut some holes big enough to actually get the wheels out.

All i need to do now is get myself some foam and mexican blanket for the van and hotrod seats then i have some lovely wood grain contact to trim the inside walls of the van.

Party central!

Just needs a decent amount of booze in that esky, a telly screen on the underside of that caravan hood and a good bit of sound and your the envy of every bloke at summernats

How sweet would this be if you could get it on club reg.......

So I finished the little rod and took it to Chopped last year in Newstead VIC. everything worked pretty well but the 5hp engine proved to be too small to pull a caravan with people in it effectively and to do donuts well so last week I stumbled upon a pair of cx500 bikes for sale and have set about putting a v twin 500cc in the front.

Here is a crappy video I got of it at chopped. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=icwdg5URexc

and here it is with the new engine mounted and original bike shaft drive hub modified to fit to the rear axle.Attached File  10251941_10154128713280274_3412079299827586852_n (2).jpg   100.03K   0 downloads

I just need to get myself an old 2 piece driveshaft with centre bearing  and hook it all up so it will drive now.  Heads should just poke out of the bodywork which should look cool and pipes  and mufflers can run down the sills.

The only other thing I will have to do is cut the back out a bit to push the seat a bit more towards the rear.

50 hp and 50ft lbs or torque should move it along a lot better now!
