In QLD the (normal) registration fee for a 202/3.3 two door Torana is getting close to the $1,000 a year mark.

As I have just paid the rego It got me thinking about Special Interest Rego (Qld,  but other names in other States..Historic etc) as it seems  seriously cheaper.

So I am seriously considering the change as the car is not a daily driver, not even a monthly driver, but am chasing thoughts re the Pros and Cons.

I did use the search function track but the only one i found , that was kinda relevant,  seemed more about modifying cars.

So, as mentioned, looking for the good and bad experiences of the "club type rego"

Cheers

Got my GTR on the NSW Historic Rego ( Condition Registration Scheme ) via our club.

It is substantially cheap than normal, as are the Green slip and Comprehensive insurance.

For non daily driver cars it's a real winner.

Rego inspection via club, instead of RTA.

Downsides? -

Cant just get in and go for a drive.
Need to formally advise the club registrar if you want to go on a maint. run.( Email/text for our club )
Maint run can be for many reasons, but limit to a 40km loop from home address.
Think they are limited to 40 occasions a year?
Can go on all club runs etc.

Summary - IMHO its a winner.

A gorilla to register a Torry? I paid my 6 month pensioner concession rego yesterday. Just under $175, no restrictions.

Both of my classics are on the SIV concessional rego. It is very restrictive in QLD now that I have read how other schemes are run.

Upside: cheap rego, cheap insurance and gives you less opportunity to drive the car ( I see that as an upside as the car stays in better nick for longer)

Downside: you need to be a current and continuous financial member of a car club, some clubs expect 12mth membership before they will supply a dating certificate, if your club is not local you cannot drive the car during club events, if you do drive the car, the only loophole you can really use is, you are driving it for the purpose of road testing provided it is within a 15klm radius of where its garaged (that's my get out of jail card I keep up my sleeve) I just bled the brakes officer!! You will also need an up to date RWC when you apply.

Personally I do think its quite restrictive, but I don't have a problem with looking at my cars in the shed rather then driving it.

And yeah, I think my BMW is getting up around the 1k mark for rego plus insurance. Bit of a joke really.

The QLD DOT website explains it all pretty well surprisingly.
