Just been reading this thread http://www.gmh-toran...ox/#entry758271 and some of the comments have spurred this question?

I've never seen a blown up one either? Usually the shifter is the main problem?

I have put them behind 202s 3 or 4 times with cable clutch, worked really well. only problem I had was speedo as there was no drive cog for 308 diff

could buy them for $100 from wreckers back in the early 90s while the aussie 4 spd was $250 and more

still got couple laying around

Good idea for a thread. I am obviously a massive advocate for TorqueMaster/MC6 boxes - only two problems are lack of overdrive 5th, and that they don't bolt up to a 308!

The one in my green sedan (which admittedly I didn't have heaps of poke or grip) never gave me any problems, and I used to drop the clutch a lot and chirp tyres into gears every time I drove it. Very cheap, good shifter feel, never get stuck in a gear, full cable clutch in all of them and you can swap cogs very quickly.

I used to have a Gemini with a 202 + MC6 box squeezed in it. I thrashed the hell out of that thing, never had any probs with the gearbox... went through two motors and heaps of tyres but!

 I stuffed one years ago.

It was in my aforementioned 4 cyl VC Commodore and I decided to re use it behind the very warm 179 that I fitted to the Commodore not expecting it to last forever behind that engine.

All worked well until a trip back from Adelaide cruising along at a reasonably high speed across the Hay plains.

Slowing down to 60 as I approached Balranald the car suddenly set up a nasty vibration.

What had happened was that the gearboxes rear seal and bush had slid out of the back of the gearbox so the yoke was no longer supported (hence the vibration).

Called the NRMA and borrowed his tools to knock it all back in.

Got about 80km out of Balranald and it happened again when I slowed down for some road works.

Found that I could cruise at speeds up to a massive 70KMH without the vibration so I stopped at a phone box near Darlington point (no one had mobile phones in 1989) and called my brother and arranged for him to meet me in Wagga with my ramps and tools.

Knocked it back in and peened the housing a bit to make sure that the bush was not going to come out again.

Backed off the throttle coming down the hill near Tumblong and there was a terrible noise as it ripped it's way out AGAIN.

Got home and bought a new bush and seal (there was nothing left of the old ones) but the housing was so torn up that the bush was loose in the housing so that gearbox was stuffed. Glued the bush into the back of the stuffed housing with liquid steel and babied the car around for a few weeks until I gathered the parts to fit a Celica 5 speed box.
