Hey guys I have a 94 triton ute which under load tends to ping. I have advanced the timing 3 degrees from where it originally was and have used PULP and it is still there. What could I possibly try next to try and fix this problem? I'm unsure of the timing before, I dont know how to check. It starts up better with the advanced timing and that is about it!

Advancing the timing makes the pinging worse...I'd put it back about 5 and see how you go.

Does it have plenty of water in it? If the water level drops the head runs hotter and it will start to ping (before it siezes) reguardless of timing.

Yup water level is good. I'll take the timing back and see how I go, thankyou.

Maybe try some carbon cleaner if the timing is correct & it is still pinging. The spraycan from Subaru is pretty good.

retarded it 4 degrees and it doesnt ping anymore, 5 degrees was a touch too much. It is a dog when it starts cold though now. Stalls and needs a really good rev to get it going

you really should set it to factory specs and then deturmine if there are any other underlying faults.

Hi Guys.
Aidan, what are you doing trying the diagnose & tune a motor if you don't know the factory specs, that would be the minimum you need. Please take this as constructive criticism, take the time & find out the details you need, you can cause serious engine damage by not doing this job properly.

if its the 2.6 lt 4G54 then its 3-7 degrees @ idle
if its the 6G72 V6 3.0 lt its 5 (+ or - 2) degrees @ idle with timing check connector terminal grounded.
