Hi

i have recently bought a lx torana and it looks like the chassis number has been cut out for the radiator too fit.

all 3 other plates are on the car and looks like they have not been molested.

not that there is any need as it was originally a 4cyl then registered as a 253 now has in it a 350 chev.

the car has been unlicensed for about 3 years that i can tell and i will be ringing RTA for checks too see if it on the stolen car registry or writeoff

my concern is without the body numbers on the car can it still be licensed.

i am in perth if that helps anyone with the rules regarding this

If it has previously been registered with the details you now have, it should be OK.

thats what i was hoping , if the vin number shows as registered before than they should be able to restamp.

just see it as a waste of a car just for numbers missing from the body

Good Luck Tony,

I would hate to think the Torana is obsolete. Dave I

On mine it looks like the area has been attacked with a rampant wire wheel and grinder for a rust repair. Fortunately the numbers are still faintly visible.

The tags still have the factory rivets and I got a fair bit of paperwork with the car so hopefully it won't be a problem, though it too has been unregistered for a few years.

I guess it's going to be up to the eyesight of the local mechanic doing the roadworthy whether I have to take it into the DoT for a serious check.

But rural QLD is probably easier for sorting out such matters.

DOT qld will NOT use the VIN numbers. Ensure your RWC inspector uses the chassis number on the RWC certificate.

Great tip for those that haven't gone through the process before.

Same here. I then had to take the car in for an inspection by the DOT officers. Obviously nothing dodgy going on, was just a fart ass around getting the car in there for them to take 5 seconds to sight the numbers.

I went through this recently with getting my torana on the road applied for a surrogate number but they wouldn't give me one due to the chassis number being stamped on the plate on the firewall ended up being a big frOck around by the DOT out of date forms sending me to the police station when I didn't have to got it sorted the police officer who did handle the vehicle check was more helpful then the whole DOT were

Yeah, I was talking about the chassis number. The area has been attacked as I say. I don't think the guy I bought it off knew the numbers were there. There was a thin smear of bog over the top that I had to chip off to check the numbers before I handed over the money. He (or someone else he'd got it from) had bought it unregistered a few years previously, going by the papers I got with it,  and never finished it off for rego.

I've actually changed rego or re-registered a grand total of 7 vehicles here in QLD now, 3  in the last 6 years, so I know the score very well.

But it's good advice  for others.

I asked the Perth Technical section about replacing a the panel with the chassis number as it was rusty. I was told that chassis number tag is sufficient and they were not that interested in the chassis number on the body when it comes to a car as old as a Torana. You could give the licensing services section a call on 13 11 56 to confirm vehicle identification requirements.

It would probably be simpler to just turn up with the car and when they ask about the chassis number just point them at the tag.

what a ball ache.

compliance plates, vin numbers, body numbers, apparently don't mean a thing.

managed to get the chassis number from the registration sticker on the window, luckily Victorian stickers have the rego number on them and was able to trace the car that way.

Chassis number is not located anywhere on the plates???

done a revs check and vehicle theft check, money owing and car comes back clean.

last registered as a V8 253. this should make things easier.

licensing centre reckons having no chassis number is no big deal, it will be registered without one.

thanks for the help guys/gals

If your chassis no doesn't match the one on the tag you've got problems...

The chassis number on the plate is ALX00---M

but the car is licensed as V942-1P

i have left the numbers blank for privacy reasons

why would have the car have been licensed with a V number?

Thanks. So that means the police have put a new chassis number to that compliance tag?

Yes. Vic police will assign a chassis number if one does not exist. They also appear to assign chassis numbers to recovered stolen cars.

Check the left hand inner guard (passenger side) as thats where many police numbers are stamped.

If you don't find it there then just go over the entire engine bay, the Victorian Police Number should be there somewhere.

Finally found the chassis number stamped in the engine bay after rubbing back several parts that looked like they may have had a number stamped into it.

ended up being on the drivers side near the holes where the k frame bolts in.

thanks for the help everyone
