Anyone got any advice on making, acquiring or paying someone to create a new seal for the 70's - 80's style pop-up sunroof in my old 4wd Hilux please ?

I don't really want to remove it if possible as the cab has recently been professionally painted (I didn't realise it was going to be so difficult to find one) and it will be handy up here. I can park the vehicle and leave it open to let the hot air out.

I've been to the local (Bundy) seal shop and the guy who works there says he has the same problem with 3 of his vehicles. He keeps his sunroofs permanently closed. I got a length of a type of seal off him to try to make something up but I'm just wondering if anyone has had this problem and solved it somehow before ?

Thanks

My recommendation if nobody can help you there would be to install a larger aftermarket (new) sunroof. They can actually be pretty good value for money, even fitted by someone else. And you could just get one that is a fraction larger than what you've got. All depends on your budget though.

I saw some new pop ups somewhere recently on the 'net when I was trying to track down a seal and yes I was surprised at the prices. They are still big in the UK. I even talked to a dude there via email about a seal and he suggested the same thing.

Before I painted it, I pushed it up and scraped the silicon out and Sikaflexed it so removal would be fun. And the dickhead who installed it welded some 10mm rio bar from one side to the other and the welds have penetrated the roof skin,

And yeah mate, Clark's are probably worth a try. I'll call them tomorrow.

We don't have one here but I think there's one in Gladstone.

There was a Bundaberg Rubber and Foam but the poor buggers went bust after they moved from the town centre to a big new premises in the industrial area.

What do yez reckon about building a seal completely out of Sikaflex ? Is that a possibility ? How long would it last ?
