Hi guys. It's time to consult my educated Torana brethren on issues of the speedo.

I have used the search with no avail so apologies if this has been remedied before. Someone can drop me the link.

I have a programmable electronic VDO cockpit series speedo with a three wire hall effect sensor on my 700R4 trans. The wiring, sensor and speedo are all new. I have read that the speedo should preform a full sweep when you turn the ignition on.

Here's the first problem. Mine bleeps backward slightly when the ignition is turned on??? There is no full sweep. The digital display comes on showing 0.9 and when i push the program button the trip shows 0.0

Second problem is the speedo has never showed a speed on the gauge. I have tried to perform an auto cal to 1 mile (I live in the states) *Note: I bought the speedo in Australia as a 0-200kph so i'm not sure if it does kilometers AND miles... I didn't try and calibrate in Aus. Anyway the Auto cal came back with error as it does when the pulses are out of spec.

OK throw the suggestions at me.

I have spent hours on this and i'm well pissed with it.

Cheers,

Don't you have the instructions?  Mine came with detailed insturctions.

My VDO speedo does not do a sweep when you turn it on, it does what yours does and bleeps backward slightly.

There is 3 ways to set them from memory, I have always adjusted my speedo by calculating the number of pulses per km (or mile in your case) and plug in that multiplier and bingo away it goes.  When changing diffs etc, just get the old number out of the speedo, calc new ratio and then change to suit and it works before the car rolls out the driveway.

How do you have the wires hooked up from the 3 wire speed sensor?

G'day toranamat.

Mate thanks heaps for the reply. It is great to hear that your speedo bleeps backward a touch like mine. I was concerned the speedo was on the blink. It was custom installed to make my dash look original so changing it would have been a nightmare.

Onto the instructions. Yes I have all the instructions.... pages and pages of instructions. It is wired as such.

Looking at the back of the speedo.

Terminals:

8765

4321

Terminal connections

Terminal 4: +12v ignition.

Terminal 3: 0v/ground and jumper to the black wire of sensor.

Terminal 2: Red sensor wire.

Terminals 6&8: Off white from sensor. Jumped together

Sorry guys, I should have given you the wiring terminations last night.

If you want to calculate the pulses on a 700R4 with a pale green 45 tooth running a 3.55 diff ratio with 275/35R18 then go for gold :-) I have read up on how to calculate and I really have no Idea. Hence the all to easy AutoCal function (that isn't working lol)

I did flip through the menu on the speedo and it was showing (what I guess to be factory set) 91,800 pulses. I changed it to 60,000 remembering somewhere that a max of 60,000 is required for AutCal... Even though I'm sure the two are not related. I haven't tried an new auto cal yet...

I'm so happy to hear your's doesn't sweep. Cheers

Do you know how many pulse your speed sensor is?  They come in various types, 8, 10, 16 are the common ones.

I can't find my VDO info at the moment but yeah my instructions were out of date for my speedo as the wiring on the back was different to the actual speedo so I wouldn't worry about the instructions not being dead on.

I suspect you either need to get a number of pulses per km programmed in for the speedo to start working, or the sensor is not hooked up correctly. I was originally running a VDO speed sensor and then swapped to a Corvette one and I had to change the wiring to get it to work again.

Also need to know what colour your speedo drive gear is.

Are you sure on the 45 teeth on the driven gear as 45s are light blue on the searches I did.

Hey hey. Yeah i'm almost dead sure the gear drive is grey and a 45 tooth. I found the same thing online so at the time I checked again. def 45 tooth. There was a bit of oil and crap on the gear so maybe more light blue than grey :-/

I just searched for the order email for the sensor but to no avail. I'm almost positive it is 16 pulses. I remember this because I have a B&M torque lock up that apparently requires a 40 pulse sensor. Just another thing I need to try and work out later.

So... 16 pulses it is.

I'm still at a loss as to whether or not I need to connect it to term 8 AND 6 or if I just need term 8. It says to connect both if a pull up resistor is needed... still looking into that. I might try a cal with term 6 disconnected. And I will search high and low for the part number of my sensor.

Cheers.

Hi I've found it's easier to use the "PLUSE" setting to calibrate the speedo, mine is set at 5730 pulses with 3.25 ratio diff and 245/60 14r tyres.

I used a gps and drove at a set speed then stopped and adjusted the pulses up or down then drove again to see how close it is to the gps

then stopped and adjusted it again.

I suspect that the speedo is not seeing any pulse. It may be that the sender needs a pull up resistor to get the pulse to a voltage that the VDO speedo will register. If the pulse setting was wrong you would still expect the needle to register a speed at 100 km/h plus.

Probably worth a trip to an auto electrician to check the output from the sender.

Ok gang, it is update time.

I have fixed the problem... Well I haven't done an auto cal ye but I have fixed the sensor issue.

I checked between terminal 2 and 3 (The red and black sensor wires) and got about 5V.

Then I checked between terminal 3 and 8 to check signal voltage and I had 4V. I put the trans in N and spun the wheels. I was expecting 4-0-4-0-4-0-4-0V as I rotated but alas, 4V remained.

Anyway... long story short, the square shaft that connected the sensor to the drive gear was not connecting (missed by that much) so I tapped the brass retainer down the shaft a little and reinstalled. Started her up and threw her in D for go (it was on stands) and holy crap the speedo moved as I sped up. That is the first time since installed that I have seen it move.

I'll update when the AutoCal is done.

A huge thanks to all who commented. Big shout out to Toranamat69.
