Hi all

The old Register of Encumbered Vehicles Service (REVS) was discontinued in Jan 2012. The replacement system is now managed at the Federal level and is known as the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) and is now part of a much broader database. The various State transport authorities websites have a link through to this service when a person wishes to perform an on-line check of a vehicle with a view to purchase.

I have it on excellent advice, that using this service in respect of pre 1 Jan 1989 manufactured vehicles will result in an inconclusive or incorrect report. In other words, the car will be reported as having no encumbrances.

The date 1/1/1989 is when the international standard for Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) was introduced in Australia. It is this international VIN standard on which the PPSR database relies in respect of motor vehicles.

The only way to check the status of a vehicle that predates 1 Jan 1989, is to approach the local police with the Chassis Number and Engine Number and politely ask if there is any record of this vehicle having been reported stolen.

Cheers

Bazza

So they can't input an older vehicle's chassis number into the system in place?

It seems odd.

When I used it in May this year for a 74 model they suggested two searches, 1 using chassis number and 1 using vin. The vin came up no data and the chassis showed all the current details. Both said no entries regarding bad news.
