I know the digital is the latest release thing, but why is it substantially cheaper and is there an advantage
to sticking with the regular non-digital unit?
All opinions appreciated, especially from those with experience of both units.

The digital controllers lend themselves more easily to additional controls (rev limiters, two-steps, boost retards etc), either as add ons or built into the box. Output from either is similar, but anecdotal evidence is that the analog unit is more reliable.

Its the anecdotal evidence that I am most interested in.

The 6AL (6420) is now discontinued. You can still buy them and the 40th aniversary model until they run out.
The 6AL is an alalogue model that takes the traditional "pill" for rev limit. They put out 450 - 480 volts and about 115 mJ of spark energy.
The 6AL Digital (6425) is a completely revamped model. Its a bit thinner and runs a microprocessor (hence being digital)
6ALD's put out 530 volts and about 135 mJ of spark energy, so they do have a bit more oomff.
The 6AL Digital also has rotary dials to set your rev limit.
I have fitted bag loads of ignitions from various manufacturers and have run many at the track myself.
There is no difference in reliability between analogue and digital in the MSD range that I have experienced (I have seen DOA units with both, though fairly uncommon)
You will be fine with either, but I would go the 6AL Digital. IMHO
