I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a 253 build to get good power I have 5 of them so not upgrading to a 308
I have a few sets of heads pollution and pre pollution tips on porting would be appreciated
All of them will need a bore to some extent that's why I was thinking stroking would be the way to go. I've also got a few 308 cranks
4 barrel manifolds
600 Holley
A few quadrants
Any help would be great
Specs combinations

I don't know about stroker kits for a 253

but I would recommend using a 465 holley as the quady is too big

Build one to the same specs as a Commodore cup 253 I think they make around 400hp

Isnt 308 the same stroke? I know 253 is 3.625" bore and 308 is 4" but not sure on the stroke. Afaik a 355 stroker crank makes a 253 290 or so.

A 308 quady can be ok but this will depend upon cam, manifold and heads etc. If I recall correctly the 253 Commodores came with a quady, but they had different metering rods etc to the 308 version.

The 253 has similar valve to block problems as the 202 because bore size is the same . so the greatest improvement is by increasing bore size , Call Bob at Action  Crank Service  02 97563840 ,he has done many of these ,and even has a 290 ci engine sitting there which may be for sale .

308 is the same stroke as a 253 so in theory you could bolt a 355 stroked crank and rods in there
piston choice is a separate matter but
or offset grind the crank to fit 350 or 265 hemi rods
i'd keep the quaddie and rejet it...they are a very under rated carb
but to get the best out of them you need to go to someone who knows what thier doing

Vr-vs 304 block can be had for about $500. Unless you just want something different, why not put all your efforts and money in to something that will make the power much easier?

If you do a search on here there are a few threads on 253 and 308 strokers.

From memory the 305 Chev piston is a good match for the 253 with a 0.120" overbore or similar. You then need to change rods and or the stroke to get deck heights correct. Here are a couple of interesting threads from a while ago....
