Hey guys, just stripped about 4-5mm of the teeth off the end of one of my axles & I think it's f@#ked the part on the diff centre where the axle slides in. I tried putting a fresh axle in but it won't slide in all the way. It's a borg warner lsd centre that's just been rebuilt so I'm not real happy.
Any help/suggestions please.
Cheers, Nig.
Yep the cones and side gears can be replaced. Talk to your diff builder.
Stripping 5 to 6mm off the end of the axle spline sounds like the axle wasn't engaging deep enough into the side gear?

Hi Nig,
You will have to remove the diff and strip it down and clean all the parts up.
Metal pieces are not good for bearings and if you are lucky, you may only have pieces of axle in your spline. Dave I
as Dave said - axles are short

When I put it all back together I knew it wasn't rite because the axles could move in & out like 4mm-6mm when everything was all bolted up. But they were the same axles & housing as before I swapped it to an lsd centre so I never thought there was such a small amount of axle spline seated in the diff centre as I'd been driving it around for over 3mths like that without issue.
The old saying "It'l never happen to me" never applies to me.
Cheers, Nig.

But still, that implies that theres only 5-6mm of the axle locating in the spider gear....SSssooo i would be talking to the diff builder about the fact that he made your axles the wrong lengh.
Cheers.

So I had a lsd centre put in the housing but I never gave him my axles as he said he didn't need them to fit it all up.

Gday guys,
I now know what's happend. Because the bearings had seen better days they had a fair bit of play in them so they moved outwards going around a corner.
Also whoever done the diff conversion never gave any thought that someone might one day throw a lsd centre in & they made the overall length 10mm-12mm little longer but used the standard axles.
I never really knew that the lsd had two parts where the axle splines went into, they slide in through the side gears & through the lsd cone. So when it was a open wheeler it had only half the axle spline engaged which was fine but when the axle was in the lsd centre it was ok though the cone part of the spline but only sitting in 3mm-4mm of the side gears & under a lot more pressure only just holding on untill moved out a few mm & spun in there & made a mess.
I just hope that there's not to much shrapnel in there & all my brand new bearings are fine.
Cheers, Nig.
