I am glad that this topic has come up.

Just so you all know, it is a stencil (to paint the SJ) and not a decal.

Myself and Dave from Grafix are trying to make sure that we get the decals right for all of the cars so having these sorts of pics up, helps us out greatly!

The GB one for the L34 looks pretty much like the same font as the SJ for the A9X.

The HP and HS ones look like stickers which I would think wouldn't last too long on the Rocker Cover..

if anyone has anymore pics of these, please post them.

cheers

Mick

I bought a brand new manual VK 134 pack in 1986, it had the 4.9 litre engine that they called the black motor, the engine code was LV2, I am certain when I got it the rocker covers were black, I changed them after a while to chrome ones, likewise the air cleaner had a GMH 5.0 Litre sticker on it, even though it was a 4.9, I changed that for a chrome lid too, and put the Brock 4.9 litre sticker on it (dead cool)

Funny thing was , a mate of mine at the same time bought a manual VK Berlina which was called the 234 pack, his was also a 4.9 litre, but his engine code was V7X, there was only a month between the manufacture of these 2 cars as well, mine was 12/85, and his 11/85, never did know what the difference was, although mine did seem to go better than his

Any info on the diffrerence in these engines would be appreciated, I had that car for 10 years and sold it in 1996 for $11,000 it only had 103,000 km on it, I remember at the time I could have sold it 20 times over, the phone never stopped ringing, long before the internet, and carsales.com.au, just the trusty old Trading Post for those who remember it

The V7X motor had a VG prefix & had big valve heads & all of the other necessary stuff to enable Holden to homologate the 500 SS Group A 'Sporting Evolution' Commodores for Group A touring car racing. Holden had to make 5000 of these to qualify.

134/234/334 packs with this motor were very sought after by those 'in the know'.

Hi Mick,

I spotted some pics of a very original looking LH SL/R 5000 engine bay. I reckon there is evidence of where the old HS decal was attached to the rocker cover, imagine it was like a papery type of decal????. It's also got that bloody four lobed oil filler cap!!!!!!

Edit: just noticed that passenger side rocker cover has a wiring tag fitted to it so may not be the original rocker cover.

Terra, I just had a look at my Grp A and it looks like the motor is Rocket Red, although I don't know its early history and could have been resprayed. (It has the "Black" gearbox as apposed to the "Red" one  :D) Is the killrust red similar to the red found on the M21 in my Torana? And is that the same red found on the 149 powered EHs?  Sorry this is a page away on the thread but I can't make the quote button work.

Yeah it's just a 5000 but I wonder if the rocker cover has been swapped with an L34 at some stage of its life?

This thing about the Holden engine red is as vague as.

The red that you say looks like red oxide is the original red used on EH/HD/HR engines except X2s. X2 engine used a brighter red which they called Rocket Rd. To confuse the issue further, HK-HZ engines were painted in what they called HK Rocket Red, which is different again & is the regular 'orangey' red that is most common.

When the SS Group A was released they said at the time that the engine was painted 'Rocket Red'. But this colour, IMHO is much closer to the old EH/HD/HR red than either of the Rocket Reds.

I still think the VK GPA engine is more like signal red or fire engine red (the similar basic red you get in cans and tins on the shelf at hardware shops in the likes of fiddlebits, kill rust etc) than HK rocket red of the earlier 308's.

Dr Terry, do you think the VK 202i was painted a different red again?

Datto, maybe you could break away all this red talk into it's own thread??

Is anybody making these as a stamp rather than a decal?

Not a 308, but this is on a 202 in an LH.

Auto or manual Laurie? And pre or post 8/75? All only if it's the original engine.

8-74 auto. I think it is original. Datto might have a better idea as I got it from him.

That nails LQ as the engine code for one of the pre-LX pilot LH 3.3L engines (manual or auto). After LX pilots (8/75-ish) as at least one of the codes may have changed as the autos went to QL engines and the manual stayed as HL.

Yes, Mick has the stencils, but I was hoping for a stamp.
