HI, I'm putting a 253 v8 into my 1974 Lh sedan,

i didn't get any of the charcoal canisters with it, so i was wondering how i can make it meet the emissions control laws

suited to 1977 to make it legal in queensland.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

74 wouldn't have had cannisters

It was pre the ADR's that required it

Same as my LH

Why do you need to meet 1977 laws... is that the year of the 253 your using ?

Who would know unless they are a date code checker ?

It is a lot of work and expense to upgrade a 1974 LH to 1977 specs especially if it is an auto. You have to change the fuel tank, add vapur separator, vapour line, carbon canister. Then change the whole top end of the engine, add thermo flap into the exhaust plus a fair bit of wiring and plumbing for spark and EGR controls.

IMO stick with the 1974 emissions.

thanks heaps, didn't realise it was so much work, i guess i could always just try and pull the wool, and just leave it without it........ or would a cat convertor in the exhaust be sufficient?

Cat does not cover all emissions, even commodores with cats have PCV and charcoal canister for fuel tank etc etc...

is there any way of adapting commodore stuff to work? Or would i be better off trying to find original torana stuff? Or just not worry about it, how would i go explaining it to Queensland transport? inspection officer that it doesn't need it all? I doubt they would believe me.....

I doubt they would even notice the age of the engine if you don't tell them

Cannisters are easy to find

Just stick an aftermarket manifold and a 1974 spec Quaddy on it, they probably won't notice. An Engineer will but not a roadworthy Inspector. Do they look at date codes?
