What sealant is compatible and best used for the Fuel Sender Unit O Ring?

I have an aftermarket fuel tank and I recently replaced the Fuel Sender Unit with a new O ring but it doesn't quite put enough pressure on the o ring enough to seal the fuel in. After Fuel splashes around in the tank it weeps out.

The previous owner put the fuel tank in and he had applied sealant, but unknown what the sealant is best to use

If the red goop on your old sender unit is hard then it will be 'Stag', if it is soft and rubbery then it will probably be some type of silicone.

Don't need to put any sealer on the "O" ring, as TerrA LX mentioned. The "O" ring may need to be replaced, it could be compressed slightly.

It's a New O ring that came with the new Sender Unit

http://www.rarespare...?product=SU1000

The way that these are fitted is you place the O ring on the tank and then fit sender unit in. After that you place the plate on it and twist. Once fitted correctly I checked the fitment and wiggled the pipe outlet and it move slightly. What I really need is a bigger 'O' Ring as in thickness of the 'O' Ring.

So far I have options thanks to Steve from the link:

I think I will sort out a bigger o ring first before I use sealant.

I had a similar problem. I took the sender unit out and slightly flattened down the tabs on the tank to put more pressure onto the o ring when the sender fastening ring is locked down.

Try 71xu1 idea first, but DON'T put any sealer on the "O" other than vasolene.

This is what I had to do. Maybe the tabs which hold pressure on the sender have bent back over the years?

I have said it's an aftermarket fuel tank... I cannot bend those tabs back as they are too thick.

Here's a Photo... The red stains there are from the previous owner who put sealant on the 'O' Ring, There are still chunks of it still in the place of the 'O' Ring.

Looks like it's Stag

^ Maybe the material UNDER the tabs has sunk, maybe you could dolly it back up to get a tight seal on the o ring.

Or,
Could you get a washer/shim the correct diameter to shim up the locking ring?

In any event I would be removing all traces of the red sealant.

There are still chunks of it still in the place of the 'O' Ring.

If any of the "chunks" are where the "O" ring goes then that is why it is weeping

Stag sets like cement

May need a good clean and scrape before re-applying the sender unit and O ring
