I always thought the highlights on the black LH 5000 dash was silver, but not sure now. Have seen a few pics with white. Perhaps silver only on the LX S models? Most old pics are black and white and some of the better restored cars dont have any highlights? Any thoughts?

I've seen it too Toranavista (the white edging). My guess is that the paint has degraded somehow - maybe with cleaners over the years.

That raises a question that I've been curious about for some time.

Was the silver highlight around the dash fascia actually paint or was it some type of vacuum metallizing? I have a feeling that it was the latter of the two and I believe that after time the aluminium flakes of leaving the 'faded' white look of the exposed plastic underneath. :<_<:

I am sure the dash silver across the SS and SLR dashes wasn't actually painted but another process.. The thin 'chrome' silver lines on the dash looks to be similar to how they do the silver on door trims - heated and pressed on (like on business cards and book covers).

mine looks more like stenciled silver paint but i could be wrong as its hard
to tell after 30 odd years i was actually thinking about touching mine up with a silver paint pen

it's meant to be chrome on all the dashes

^ ditto that. My dash is chrome trimmed (faded in bits) and the spare (in same condition) is the same.

I think Supercheaps chrome spray cans will be in demand after this lol
Of course I jest.

Toranavista has some 3M Chrome tape, it's the best product I've seen thus far. Spose it begs the question, How do you chrome plastic?

The process is called vacuum metalizing. It is a different process to electroplating or chrome plating.

Do a Google search, it will explain it better than I can! ;)

I use a small can of plastic modelling enamel. The silver works very good. A really steady hand & a suitable sized modeling paint brush & $2 worth of paint.
The finish lasts for years.

good luck with this one guys..

There are ppl out there that "rechrome" plastic dashes, however because the LH/LX dashes are so fine when it comes to chrome area, no one is willing to try and redo them..

By the same token, if someone does find someone that will redo them, let us all know..

cheers
Mick

i was thinking that you could use the Mylar stuff that people use for the chrome on their door trims.
stick it on then trim it off with a sharp knife and a steady hand. I will see if I can get some and give it a go

been down that path, I hope you have lots of patience. I found the mylar came off in places and didn't cut straight all the time. Lost patience with it after a few attempts
