Fuel Gauge Fun...

the fuel gauge in my LX is not registering anything at all. I've earthed the gauge out to test it and it runs right the way through to full, so i figure its not the gauge.
I followed the advice of a similar problem in this forum and re-earthed the tank sender unit but still no reading...
Is it possible to remove the unit and clean it without removing the tank... is there anything else it could be...
the wire running from the unit, into the boot and then up the drivers side into the harness seems to be ok...should I isolate that wire and test it for resistance/breakage?
any help is much appreciated
Cheers,
Nik.
p.s. yes, i had the ignition on when I was checking the unit, and yes there is fuel in the tank (bout 20L)

sender is at the right front of tank and is accessable from under the car. It is a clip arrangement witha O-ring seal... very easy to remove and doesnt require a complete empty tank to remove as long as car is level.sender is in the top of the tank under boot mat i think. could be wrong but most cars have em on top

The gauge should head for full quickly. Get someone else to watch for you.
Important is not too long, this will check the entire system from the sender to the gauge. If the gauge works it has to be the sender.

You can obviously go lower than this but Holden planned on 15L.

AAAhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!Think i'm right here, take the wire from the sender and short it direct to earth.
DON'T ever do that to an LX gauge - not even for a short time, you'll cook it. All the LX gauges were designed for a minimum sender unit resistance of 10 ohms. If you really want to check the gauge, go and buy a 10 ohm 1/2 watt resistor at around 10 cents, and put it between the sender wire and earth. That should make the gauge read zero. If you're keen, a 68 ohm one will make it read full scale, and a 27 or 33 ohm one will make it read mid scale. You can use the same resistors to check the fuel, oil and temp gauges.
