Hey guys, im doing an engine rebuild and thinking of putting on a vacuum pump. I always had problems with braking power and my mechanic said a pump will also give more hp and im always looking for more hp. Has anyone here used one and which brand would you recommend. I have a sbc and the only one ive seen is a moroso brand for over a grand, seems expensive.

Are you referring to a crank case vacuum pump or a brake vacuum pump? A crank case pump relieves pressure within the engine and seems unnecessary unless you are running low tension rings or maybe blower/nitrous. A brake vacuum pump is used to maintain vacuum within the booster if your cam generates inadequate vacuum. Under  about 12" of engine vacuum and you will need either a vacuum pump or hydroboost if you want assisted stopping. SBC make a brake vacuum pump which works well, but they are really noisy. A brake vacuum pump is more like $350 than $1,000.

The way i understood it from my mechanic was it takes vacuum from the crank case and transfers it to the booster, is that right or are they two different pumps

2 different pumps

If your running a big cam with lots of overlap you won't be making much vacuum and therefore your brakes will suffer

In which case install an alternator off a diesel (pick one that will cope with your rpm) that has a vac pump built into the back of it

Just needs an oil supply and you'll have all the vac you will ever need

The electric ones are noisy... run all the time and are generally abit naff

Other alternative is to forget vacuum altogether and run a hydraboost
