steel or chromemoly, one of the two ,and yes such a modification is acceptable as long as its done by the guidelines set out in code of practice for light modified vehicles(nsw)and done by a certified engineer or rta engineer, unless it has changed.been a while since i looked, but i have been assured by an engineer that it will pass as im getting one done too in chromemoly 6 point in rear and bolt in intrusion bars.and street registered, there use to be or he might still be doing it is andrews race cars in  nsw,if you run quicker than 10.99 you have to  roll cage, andra rules ,if its changed which i doubt some one will correct,it wont worry me if its legal or illegal i will be still be runnin one lol .

What is the purpose of having the cage ?

If you plan on doing any motorsport with it they get kind of laughed at nowdays and yes you'll want an appropriately build steel cage built to regs

hi mate.....only new to the competition arena...but my queries lately seem to say that -
......... if you race in CAMS a events that calls for a roll cage to be fitted, then you need a steel cage, unless the car has
an alloy cage fitted AND was log booked before Yr 2000.

That may be irrelevnat to what you are entering, but probably eludes to the view on alloy cages.

Alloy cages aren't legal with ANDRA, CDW,CDS mild steel or 4130 Chrome Moly only.

as far as welded goes..............

If you download the 2013 CAMS Manual of Motorsport ( remembering CAMS have nothing to do with Drags, CAMS are Targa, road events, race, rally, off road etc) there is a 20 page section called Schedule J.
Shed. J is all about "Safety cage structures".It then goes into great detail about what is what, tube sizes, gussets, mounting points, welded, bolted, etc etc etc as well as what TYPE of roll cage you need for what class/type of event.

To answer your question more directly - in that Schedule J are drawings of what is reqd if you are going to bolt it in.
( IF that is allowable for your particular class/event ). Bolt sizes, backing plate details etc etc etc.

Additionally, you probably already know...it must be certified and approved by CAMS...so even if you make the worlds best roll
cage..it means diddly if CAMS dont approve it .

My reading of the whole motor sport manual is that it fills in a good couple of hours to read it and understand it...then to
really understand what you can and cant REALLY do, you need to speak to someone who administers the particular type of event you wish to go in.Or just buy one from a certified / approved supplier and install it as per instructions and then get it ticked
off as OK.

All of this has nothing to do with drag racing. Just try'na help.
p.s. - I've only just started to need to know all this stuff, so please dont think I'm any sort of expert.

p.s.s - as for ëngineered,as in street /RTA type use.....well.. thats another / different can of worms as well.

all this info is good col   :spoton:  ,the more info on this thread will give people a better indication whats needed, either straight line or cams,6 points are required with cams, know a fella who has a cams licence with 6 pt cage and drives it on road, the thing i dont get is that he says hes allowed because of cams licence + hes an engineer but not a good one,hes been pulled up by cops and they say nothing, then again ive been pulled up by piglets and didnt know a 6 from an 8 banger,so if you have cams licence can you drive on road with an illegal 6 pt cage, or is he bullshitting
