One of my 2 local paint suppliers stocks U-Pol paints and highly reccomends them. Did a quick net search and their fillers, primers, clears, and bed-liners all get great reviews but can't seem to find much on their actual colour paints.

Now, as recommended by most people/manufacturers, I would like to keep all my products to the one system so am very tempted by U-Pol but just want to make sure their base coats are worth while. Now the car is not a show car although I want to get as close as possible. And it will be predominantly white with silver and red accents/stirpes/bonnet etc.

So does anyone have any experienced opinions ?

Thanks.

Upol makes in general fantastic products, the ones that i have tried.

Have never tried there primers basecoats or top coats though.

All the other stuff is great.

Cheers.

further investigation on their website reveals that their colours are only acrylic - although they are under the heading "2K HS Solid Colours" - I thought 2k was 2 pack enamel ??

Can't find any reference on the net to u-pol painted cars :(

Probably acrylic urethane enamel?

STill 2k, kinda like acrylic modified polyurethane enamels.

Most manufacturers stock both.

Cheers.

From the TDS :

2007 VOC compliant Ultra high solids two component acrylic coating

Has good flow with non-sag properties

Hardens rapidly to give high build, U.V. resistant coating.

Excellent hiding power, gloss and long term durability

Can be air dried, low baked or I.R. cured

Easy to polish when cured

Sounds like just an acrylic to me and I can't find any other base coat on their website : http://www.u-pol.co.uk/

Maybe I should stick to another manufacturer ? Or would it be OK to use their primers and fillers and somebody elses Base and clear ?

Yeah they stock 2k acrylic urethane enamels apparently.

Your thinking of Acrylic Lacquer.

They are stupidly nice to put on, only available in solid colors (if you dont want metallic/pearl then forget about COB), but not as long wearing as polyurethane enamels.

Im a stickler for putting one manufacturers top coat over the same brand surfacer, but as far as prep coats like your epoxy primer, bog, epoxy primer, and perhaps the first couple of fill coats not a huge drama. I dont mind mixing undercoats providing there compatible types.

Cheers.

OK so if I just want solid colours then the u-pol will be OK  and that 2k enamel / COB is overkill ?

What are you referring to when you say "stupidly nice to put on" ? Do you mean the 2k acrylic ?

I am a long way from actually painting but I am doing some major panel work so wanted to make sure that I finished the repairs off properly - looks like u-pol epoxy primer, body filler and polyester hi-fill will do the trick.

Thanks again DJ

There polyester high fill is god like for hiding lazyness.

And yes, you basically have it in one.

And by stupidly nice to put on, yes i mean acrylic 2k's. You can try pretty hard to get a run and still not succeed. Just lays out flat as a tack, doesnt quiet have the gloss of a polyurethane but a quick buff fixes that.

Cheers.
