The speedo stopped working on my u.c.
I checked out found problem to be the plastic drive on main shaft not turning.
the gear is in the extension housing.
Can this be pulled off the back of the box with gearbox in car still ?
seems to be a clip securing the gear onto the shaft .
is there anything that has to be removed to replace this gear?
any advise to make this easier would be good thanks
.
may have to buy a new GPS to replace the old school speedo, wonder if they would issue a wof?

Sounds like the clip has failed but to answer you question.

Yes you can but drink a cup of patience and keep another cup handy. I did it about 25yrs ago to my SL 186 m20 hatch. (I put the 186 there and got it passed). It is straight forward/ logical but take your time. Use a hoist for this job, it will make it so much easier and also get new oil, a new gasket before you start the job..You will need to remove the following:-

Shifter, remove right of the extension housing but you can leave the linkages connected to the shifter & box. The reverse switch is a pain though.

Exhaust, (maybe) as you need to drop the back of the engine down a little for good access.

Tail shaft, obvious.

X-member, gives you access to extension housing which must be removed to access speedo driving gear.

Remove speedo cable, take note the retainer (a flat rectangular washer with a hole in it) must slide into a groove in the speedo cable fitting to ensure it is inserted the correct depth into the gearbox.

It is best to drain box about now and remove the extension housing but watch the internal reverse selection assembly. When putting the extention housing back on, please drink the second cup of patience before you fiddle with the internal reverse selection assembly.....I needed it back then at this point.

P.S. Whilst you have it all apart, I recommend you replace both gears (driver on the main output shaft and the driven on the speedo cable).

Just to add to the above. ^^^

After removing the reverse light switch refit the bolt to retain the reverse lever detent ball and spring in the housing.

Many thanks S PAC for this info seems like a bit of a pain to do I don't see a washer any where at cable end cable fits into square in the red gear the only washer seems to be the retainer that holds the cable in. Surprised to see plastic being used on an internal.???

^^^ Don't forget many thanks to The Baron also.

The retainer that holds the speedo cable into the housing is what The Baron was referring to.

Cheers

Dave.

Many thanks dave&thanks to the baron yeah if you lived next door I would be happy to do it for you. Yeah I now realise what the retainer is a bit slow on the up take today. I have just got the dam gear box in 3weeks ago now this so if I can do without taking the whole box out againwould be good . I wonder how common this problem is.much appreciated for your advise ii may have to ask again closer to doing it. If I get stuck.regards Muzak.

Wondering if its possible to reach inside speedo drive hole on gearbox and reinstall drive gear back on clip (providing clip is still there and not broken) without pulling extension housing off? seems ive pushed speedo cable back in too far and installed retaining washer on outside of cable head and its pushed drive gear off output shaft :( cant see it through hole anymore.

Nah the clip will be sitting in the bottom of the extension housing (if it hasn't already had a close encounter with the reverse gear set).

I doubt there's any 'short cut' to be had here... drain the oil, whip the box out onto the bench and pull the back off it. You have to remove the shifter and tailshaft anyway so it's only four more bolts to pull the whole gearbox.

You were spot on bigfella. ended up pulling ext housing off and sure enough clip was sitting in the bottom. fitted new clip sealed it all back up and speedo is working spot on. Did it with box still fitted bit of jiggling around to get reverse gear selector engaged but not to bad.

Yep, you're supposed to remove the reverse selector lever and let the selector shaft drop down to re-engage the pad, but in the end I preferred to leave all that intact and just maneuver the extension housing around the reverse selector as you did.

Plus it's easy to forget the little ball bearing in the reverse detent and then it ends up in the bottom of the extension housing too!
